The Lamson/Rodrigue/McLean knife is going to the next step: We need to get some real numbers from you guys, in terms of LEGITIMATE interest. Once we get a real number, we will be able to go ahead with collecting deposits of 50% of the purchase price of the knife, and getting a prototype or two out to a select group of guys. Once everything is settled, the knife will then go to production.

What we need now is a list of guys who are willing to put a deposit down on one or more of these knives, and the number you plan on getting. We kept reading that many of you want to get one for yourself and gift another one or two, and that would be amazing!

Consider this thread the "Official Sign-Up Sheet". The purchase price is likely $200, plus shipping, so deposit will be $100USD.

Thanks guys, both for making this a reality, and for being such an awesome group of guys (and a couple ladies, I believe).

Right now we are gauging serious interest/numbers. If the numbers look good to go, we will prototype/passaround, get some feed back, adjust if necessary, then prior to commissioning Lamson, we will get deposits. This will help fund the build. Balance due on shipping.

This thread is to guage the seriousness of the forum. How many people will be ordering. Next step is a prototype, limited passaround of the prototype, tweaking if necessary, then pre orders and deposit from the members still interested. Then we set Lamson out to build them. Prior to shipping, we will collect the balance oweing on the knife.

Lefty, Just to recap so that I'm clear on what is to come. Once Lamson agrees to manufacture the blades, a 50% deposit will be required from those seeking one (or more) and then the final amount they're made?

Has the the profile, HT, steel, handle and length already been determined? I'm pretty sure we're building a low flat Chubby-Gyuto-laser with a useful tip right?

Mike9

:spitcoffee: FTW

Lefty
03-25-2013, 05:45 PM
Just a quick rundown:

O1
Sab inspired profile (no guard!!!)
Wa-estern hybrid/throwback handle with cocobolo and G10 ferrule
Approximately 3mm at the spine, with a wicked distal taper
51mm heel height
250mm edge length, and 380mm overall
THIN behind the edge

Lamson is already more than on board. In fact, Brian is pumped! The deposit would have to come once the prototype has been tried out and telesales have been made (I believe).

Thanks guys! This is going to be great. :D

PierreRodrigue
03-25-2013, 06:31 PM
My turn :D
The drawing s complete, you all have seen the screen capture, you have also seen the handle (mock up number 2) Nothing has changed, I just did a cad drawing of it all together, place the appropriate pin holes, in the proper location, and sent it to Lamson.
They will laser cut a few pieces, some will be used to build their grinding fixtures.
2 will come to me to prototype. These will go on a little passaround. Once our lucky "testers"report back, one prototype will return to me, the other will go to Lamson. They will use it as the model for the build (a physical template, they can take measurements from) Brian will send me and/or Tom an initial production prototype, and then we will give our nod or wink to proceed.

The heat treat will be done at Peters, to my specs.

don
03-25-2013, 08:34 PM
Shouldn't the prototypes be measured prior to passaround? There should be a decent amount of use/abuse in the passaround for these knives, and sharpening will change the knives. A pre/post passaround comparison would be interesting.

Also while I think a lot of us will want to be part of the passaround, should consider having two groups:
1. Beta testers
2. General passaround

The beta testers, a smaller group, will beat on the knife and run it through production work to provide valuable feedback and refinement on the knife. Once the knife has made it through the beta testers, we will have go/no-go features and decisions for manufacturing.

At this point, the prototypes can be available for general passaround.

The reason for the above structure is three folds:
1. Beta testers have incentive to provide constructive feedback in a timely manner
2. Limits number of testers as there are diminishing returns and will delay time to market
3. Allow non-testers who would still very much appreciate be included in a passaround.

03-25-2013, 09:21 PM
You know, I've seen a couple of these projects and think it's cool but I've made a point of staying out of them. One of the reasons is because someone somewhere is going to capitalize on the expertise freely given on this or other forums. I'm not talking about Lefty, Pierre or any other craftsmen here. I'm talking about a fairly good sized company that is going to get a boat load of expert consulting for free. Maybe I'm jaded but I think someone should give thought to design protection.

I hate to bring real world stuff into this but if you're fine with the thought, more power to you.

There is some history behind my thoughts.

chinacats
03-25-2013, 10:34 PM
Salty, I love the fact that you call business what it is. A fine idea about design protection, and a lawyer may not be too expensive for something like this. I do believe that this knife could definitely wind up making it's way to a much more general though professional audience; it could wind up being something fairly valuable to those with the vested interest (Tom and Pierre) if they protect the design and follow-through with some outside marketing exposure. Makes sense to at least think this part through before an 'oh crap' moment once it's too late.

Very good. You and Tom should have agreements in place with Lamson. While there is a lot of participation and feedback from the forum, you guys have really driven this project forward and synthesized all the comments into something that should prove quite interesting.

The platypus was designed by committee is absolutely correct. This knife was not designed by committee. Everyone gave opinions, but you put it all together as well as providing the profile design, specs, and working through the bolster/handle variations through mock ups.

Yes, a lot of people contributed. But I think a lot of it was freely given without expectation of payment. A contribution to KKF for each sale of the knife would be nice, as this project would not have happened without the forum and Dave's blessing.

That's nice of you to think of KKF, and myself as well, but the vendors pay to advertise and do business here so what revenue they generate on a project like this will not (should not) have anything to do with the forum or myself, it's all theirs.

I do wish Pierre and Tom good luck with this project though! :)

Well we all get a cut since we contributed (granted varied amounts lol). Maybe a free knife after you guys win a big copyright infringement suit :-)

I'm not an attorney but having written a couple of books I know a little bit about copyright and here's my take (which one should take with a lot of salt). Maybe there is an IP lawyer in the forum?? First off, in the case of a collaborative work the copyright rules are extremely tricky. If this knife is considered a collaborative work, sheesh! (The problem is everybody whose ideas appear in the knife is a partial copyright holder automatically absent written agreements.)

Next, assuming the shape is distinctive enough to qualify under the sculpture category which is the only category I would think applies (although again lawyers can be awfully clever...), it's automatically copyrighted, one doesn't have to do a darn thing in the US anymore. (Although, in order to be eligible for statutory damages, which are much higher, you do have to register the copyright.)

However, I should point out (as I suspect many of us have noticed) that when I try to explain kitchen knife shapes to my friends, it seems to them knife shapes differences are very subtle and evolutionary except for something like a Kramer and I am not sure that anything but a really distinctive shape like a Kramer or a Ken Onion knife would be enough to qualify for a sculpture category copyright. Just imagining my friends on a jury, I suspect they certainly wouldn't vote to convict, unless they felt the shape was really distinctive and not just an evolution of existing designs - although a judges instructions would change that of course....

Maybe we get Lamson to say that the knife is a limited edition and may only be sold once?? That would be way cool and I would certainly buy more than the one I am committed to!

Awesome news! I'm really excited that things are moving so quickly.

As for concerns about IP and other companies coming along and knocking off some of our ideas: I hope they do. If successful (and I think that it will be) this collaboration: both the organization and collaboration on the part of the forum and Lamson's willingness to be so responsive to what's initially a pretty small order from a small group of very demanding and knutty people should be an example for the knife industry as well. I am taking part in this and supporting it intellectually and financially because I want this knife to exist, I want to prove that this process can work, and I want to prove that the oldest knife dog in the country (L&G) can learn some new tricks and produce something that's world-beating in it's category. There's really nothing new in the kitchen knife world: everything is a copy, evolution, or composite of things that come before. I believe in openness and the free exchange of information (that's why I'm on an internet forum and not a private consulting group) and I think that "lawyering-up" and getting possessiveness is counter the the very heart of what this project and this forum should be about.

If in the end what we get from this process is an AWESOME knife at a very good price from a historic American mfg, and a bunch of other companies trying to "copy us" because our success makes them see the value of groups like ours and responsiveness like L&G's... then I'd call that a win/win.

If anything, I think that it would be cool if, once the first batch concludes, we could get this story some media attention. The media seems to really love stories like Kramer's and Cut Brooklyn's, so I can't see why they would love this one.

Amen to everything Justin0505 just said. I don't have the cash right now to order one of these (and I have the knives I need for work now anyways...) but ditto on the lack of lawyering and the like.

I know that someone will try to be opportunistic with this sort of thing but if in the end it helps change the way outside companies operate and what sorts of blade they produce then all the better. And with how driven by consumer goods we are as a society (a good thing...and sometimes a bad thing) maybe things like this will help people find cooking good food in their own damn house for themselves and for others better than going to f^%$&%ing Bennigans. Might also make people start to spend their money at good restaurants where people are devoted to beautiful nourishing food...sorry for the extended romantic rant. But a man can dream that seeing companies not produce knives that look like upside down rainbows with handles will help people start to care about how they look at food and cooking.

I'm late to the party, and read through the countless pages of ideas and plans with gusto. I like the wood/g10 combo on the handle, but curious as to whether it'll be slab sided or contoured at all? I ran across this rehandled forgecraft somewhere here, and think the subtle swell & taper would be quite comfortable. Apologies if this has been answered, but I can't remember if I've read it along the way. Either way, I'm excited to be in line to get one.

This one was designed for doing a fine mince on really tough chives... One at a time, so you could apply maximum cutting action, with full leverage applied.

Thanks for the interest guys.

Timeline is still a bit up in the air. We'll have two prototypes making the rounds with both pros and "home chefs". The list is going to be compiled by me, and no offense, but I'll be contacting those who I feel should be the testers. These guys will all be well known, respected and have a lot to compare to the prototype. We'll be trying to get a huge amount accomplished in a fairly quick period, and thus we're going to be very picky with who gets a run at the prototype. I hope nobody takes it into offense if they don't receive an "invite"....

The handle is going to be cocobolo with a black G10 bolster (95% sure), and hopefully relatively soon we'll have a few pics of the whole thing. :D

GL, Lefty and Pierrer. Hope the pass around goes well. I already know the final design will be terrific, but it's nice to see the honest checks and balances in place for knife. Gotta be real though, I wish I could test it in a pro environment pre-production. For selfish (and selfless) reasons of course. Does my love for Bubbles change anything? :)

At the risk of completely jumping the gun and chronology of the whole deal, I wonder if it might be cheaper to bulk ship the finished US based knives to a third party in the US, skipping trying to ship 100 individual US bound packages from Canada. I would expect Lamson should be able to do all shipping, including customs direct from factory. they already have the infra-structure in place via their automated web-store . All we would have to provide would be a faxed list of shipping info for paid up
members & a check for final payment. It would be worth-while to check if we could pay online to Lamson, then all address data would already be in the data base. Just a thought

IMO this is a key part of what will make this work. Hopefully there will be no grind issues like some have seen on the "other" Lamson colab projects, but if there are, having Piere and Lefty returning blades and giving them immediate feedback should help to stomp out any QC issues in production.

I'm still in awe of how fast this has progressed, I'm really looking forward to seeing that first blank with the all finish grinding done and wearing the prototype handle.

Great, guys! It means a lot to see some people popping in and showing interest. We're at a temporary standstill, but we will be forging ahead. Once the prototypes are ready to get out to the testers, we'll be getting a list together and after that, with comments for tweaks, etc, we'll have it set in stone what they will be like. At that point, the deposits, etc will be required, but not until then. We are making sure these are going to blow your socks off and be one of the best values around, along with one of the best performers in this market. Until then, we won't be hounding anyone for deposits, or even contemplating going into full production.

I just used the Hattori FH, again (thanks Rick, for the loaners), and I'm making sure we AT LEAST match the f&f and performance of that knife...with carbon steel, of course!

As soon as we have pics, we'll post them.

Thanks again!

There's no official list, yet. Just this very long thread to gauge approximate interest.

After the prototypes go out to the testers, and their feedback is taken into consideration, the design will be finalized. At that point, people will be asked to make their orders official by making deposits. (I am assuming a new thread will be started by then. Right now, there is no action anyone needs to take, since it's still too early to get on the order list.)

Lefty
05-29-2013, 05:00 AM

Without reading through 24 pages, can someone please describe what these knives are like?

We want to give a classic American knife making company a chance to redeem themselves by collaborating with them to create the ultimate throwback knife with modern materials and techniques. A knife designed by us for us that we can recommend over any other knife in it's price range when a new member asks, "What knife should I get?" Simply the best bang for your buck knife with amazing cutting ability in a hardened carbon steel that's easy to sharpen and retains it's edge for quite a while.

Shall I continue?...

What Rick said. Nicely said, by the way.

Still not sure what knife we are talking about, but I am a sucker for group buys. Count me in.

This, my friends is what we call sexy!

For those who don't care to go through 25 pages of the thread, this is the blank that is the basis of the prototype.

Prototype blades are rough ground and through HT. HRC 61, looks like I get a half day off tomorrow. I'll see what I can do...
