View Full Version : Auto-Censoring Gone Wild?

What's going on with the censorship feature?

I'm seeing common words like:
Sa.le.s
Kitchen.en.s

All being turned into censor stars, as well as others I haven't been able to figure out.
It's a bit over-zealous, I hope the machines aren't taking over.

On one thread I even saw the letters making up "unit" censored it of the middle of a larger word.

Prob trying to filter the incessant spamming from the UK kitchen ***** site - harder to get of than athlete's foot. Gotta wonder if that kind of crap ever sells anything.

I wish there was a way to really punish companies like that UK kitchen site for their behavior. Awful.

That's it exactly. Austin & Jim are on the case.

I think we should hunt then down and kill them...and their families.

A tad extreme but at least we're thinking.

We are tweaking the settings to eliminate the spammers, please bear with us as we try to give them the old 1-2.

I suspect the new owners are aware of these things, but here's some stuff I do on vBulletin forums to keep them clean:

1. Spam-O-Matic
2. Install plugin that requires x number of posts (I use 5) before people can post URL's.
3. Ask an unusual question on registration (instead of captcha), like "Type the word g y u t o without spaces."
4. Make one of the registration fields (Location, for example) required.

1 and 2 slow down the humans, and 3 and 4 stop the bots.

Made some changes to the filter so the odd censoring issues should be greatly diminished.

Thanks for the suggestions WSF.

We do have Spam-O-Matic in place, and we do have an odd question. I will take it further if the spam doesn't slow.

The entire network and everyone I know who is on forums is having an issue right now. It's like the spammers are gearing up for spring.

You can't say their name are they will appear...or is it you can't say it three times? I'm not sure, best to just not say it :devilburn:

Everyone I know online is complaining about it right now. Typically it's bad before holidays, but it seems this spring they are super active.

Global warming perhaps?

Our latest adjustments seem to have helped with this particular spammer. The spam arms race will no doubt continue.

+1

I want to ruin them, not just stop them from posting here.
