View Full Version : Preorder Sign-Up (Harner/McLean Parer)

06-07-2013, 09:16 AM
We've had so much interest in these that Butch and I are starting a pre-order list. You guys all likely know which knife I'm talking about, but here's a straightforward picture for you all to see the true look/profile of the knife.

The handle has been tapered, as per comments at ECG, even though many loved it as is. However, Butch and I talked, and we trust you guys 100%, so we tweaked it for you. :)

There are 10 of these being made in the first batch, and two are already spoken for (jjperry and I believe Johnnychance). I told others they'd have to wait, until I had solid numbers, and now we do! :D Also, there will be at least two mycarta versions, but with special requests, we can go up to 5. Otherwise, they will have this classic walnut handle.

The way this is going to work is first come, first served. The knives are not ready yet, but are in the next batch of Butch's knives to do. As a result, I won't be taking deposits until they are virtually ready to go. With that being said, the emails regarding this knife have been a bit unbelievable, so if you put your name on here, please honor the reservation so those who want one can get them.

Thanks everyone for the comments, feedback and just being flat out awesome!

Price: $135, plus shipping.

Lefty, Thanks for making this happen. Could you post some specs? Is it AEB-L? Butch did the heat treating himself right? Thanks again. Very excited. can wait for the Pierre/Lefty/Lamson Gyuto too.

06-07-2013, 09:40 AM
I'll take one, Thanks Tom and Butch!

06-07-2013, 09:44 AM
One more, and we're done!

My predictions are that there are going to be ten very happy new knife owners and way more pissed off knife wanters.

06-07-2013, 09:54 AM
Or European. Haha. :D

Or Australian :)

06-07-2013, 09:54 AM
Geez, don't you guys ever sleep? ;) Nice knife!

06-07-2013, 09:56 AM
Yeah, I actually feel badly about a few guys who didn't get their names in, but showed interest in the original thread. I have a feeling there might be a round two, three....

06-07-2013, 10:02 AM
lefty, When you get a chance, could you post some specs please? Like now OK? ;-)

06-07-2013, 10:02 AM
Arghh, you got to be kidding me. Im in if anyone backs out, if not for round two definately.

06-07-2013, 10:05 AM
Ugh. And I was waiting for this thread to pop up. And you'd think since I no longer sleep I would have caught this

06-07-2013, 10:12 AM
Guess I missed out. I was trying to log in to KKF less frequently . . . And I was one who sent a PM to ask questions after I saw the original thread.

Oh, well. I'd like to be a back up for round one, or perhaps on the list for round 2

06-07-2013, 12:48 PM
Wow, sorry I missed it. Congrats, looks like a winner.

06-07-2013, 12:51 PM

06-07-2013, 12:53 PM
Oh damn! Just realized I'm out of luck...! Darn it

06-07-2013, 12:58 PM
id like to get in on round 2 if possible.

06-07-2013, 12:59 PM
Can we go ahead and sign up for another round? I think there are more of us :).

06-07-2013, 01:09 PM
I'll talk it over with Butch and see if 20 is doable. I'll report back ASAP!

Also, for those of you who are looking for specs, these knives will have:

Blade Length: 85mm
Handle Length: 100mm
Steel Type: CTS-XHP, hardened to 61hrc
Grind Type: Hollow, on a 4' platen.

Thanks again, everyone.

06-07-2013, 01:17 PM
Already have an answer. Unfortunately, between Butch's custom orders, and razors, 10 is all he can handle for now. He might try to squeeze in an extra one, steel permitting, but that's it until round 2.

Thanks for the amazing response to this, guys!

06-08-2013, 10:39 AM
Aw, man! :D Would love to get one as well, but I guess I have to wait. If there's a round 2 please sign me up! Great job designing this one, it looks like a stunner of a knife!

06-09-2013, 09:55 PM
In on the next batch

06-11-2013, 10:05 AM
I'd like to buy one as well Tom.

06-11-2013, 05:02 PM
I'm in for one of them using Butches mycarta when they become available

NO ChoP!
06-11-2013, 08:33 PM
Can I be a definate for round two?

06-11-2013, 10:05 PM
I'm not in, can't afford it ATM, but Tom, tell Butch to bring one by my bistro so I can play with it when they are done. Then maybe I'll be in, lol

06-12-2013, 02:50 PM
In for the next round.

06-12-2013, 04:51 PM
haha everything you make sells like tickle me elmos at christmas.

06-12-2013, 05:19 PM
Haha. Thanks dough! Everyone, thanks for your interest. Butch and I are trying to figure out the best way to go about this one. I've essentially begged him to make more than the original ten, but he's a busy, busy guy.

06-13-2013, 02:19 AM
No pressure lefty, but out of curiosity, what is a ballpark timeline looking like on this project?

06-13-2013, 05:47 AM
Hopefully around a month(?) They're all being cut out now (Butch is likely seeing stars), but the factor that really complicates it is that a knife is a knife, and a parer still takes all of the steps of a normal knife. Butch really pounds them out, but ten of the same knife is enough to drive anyone a little loopy! :D

06-13-2013, 08:04 AM
That's great news. Sooner than I expected frankly.

06-14-2013, 09:32 AM
This, my friends, is what we call busting ass and making progress:

06-14-2013, 10:41 AM
Great photo. :)

06-14-2013, 11:02 AM
Thanks. I might actually get it printed and put it in my shop or office...

06-14-2013, 11:33 AM
very nice!

06-15-2013, 11:16 AM
If you're keeping a waiting list, I'd love to be on it. These look great!

06-15-2013, 11:58 AM
Tom those look spectacular.

What kinds of grinds is Butch putting on these?

06-15-2013, 02:40 PM
Thanks, Don! These are all done with a hollow grind, on a 4' platen. Wicked thin behind the edge is all Butch does or kitchen knives. :D

06-15-2013, 03:09 PM
D'oh. I remember reading that, dunno why I forgot.

Butch is a wild, wild man, and his work is just awesome.

06-18-2013, 12:56 PM
New pic. More progress. :D

That's an interesting trick for those tips. I might have to steal that from Butch...

Lefty, I know you hate this question and I know your super busy/crazy these days, believe me I'm not pushing you, just like to know where this project stands at the moment? Thanks again for all your hard/thankless work that you do for us on this forum.

07-17-2013, 10:50 AM
Just sneaking in a few replies, while at the cottage.

The knives are very very close. :D Butch's tireless QC made it so we decided to hold a few back (because he won't send out anything that isn't close to perfect). With that being said, they shouldn't be long. On top of that, I've been using only the parer and the "Rodrigue and McLean Prototype" since I got here, and I'm in love with both!

Mucho Bocho
07-17-2013, 10:54 AM
Exciting on both accounts indeed!

07-18-2013, 11:29 AM
Guys, I'm still away on vacation, but I need your shipping addresses (the guys who have paid). Please email me your addys @ tmclean@sharpandshinyshop.com

Thanks guys!

07-18-2013, 12:22 PM
Also, can you guys include your KKF "handles" in the emails?

07-23-2013, 10:48 AM
Sorry to post about this again, but I still need a few addresses for the parers. They are ALL finished and ready to go!!! For those of you who contacted me about a saya, please send that info along with the address, so I can get organized on this front. I'm still battling cottage brain, I think....

Thanks guys!

Oh yeah, Dusty and Huw, since you're fifth cousins, twice removed, did the shipping idea get sorted out? :D

07-23-2013, 11:19 AM
Here's a pic that I stole from Butch. Some of you might have already seen it....

Looks great!

07-24-2013, 10:51 AM

07-28-2013, 08:17 AM
Ok guys. All five parers that are not getting sayas have been shipped, in good faith. If you still need to pay the remainder of the cost, please send me an email for specifics. This goes for the five who are getting sayas done as well, just to keep things neat and tidy.

Again, thanks for making these a success, and a BIG thanks to Butch for making a world-class product. You guys won't be disappointed.

07-29-2013, 06:13 PM
Knife arrived today. It's beautiful, and cuts really, really well!

That tip is super-sharp! I'll do my best to take care of it (even if I did poke myself and draw blood the first time I used it).

Thanks so much, Tom and Butch!

Great looking blade - can't wait for round 2.

07-30-2013, 10:27 AM
Great news that the five parer (I'd assume) have arrived. There are still a few guys who need to finalize the payment. If you all could send it, that would be great!

07-30-2013, 10:53 AM
Received mine yesterday. Quickly made proper introductions. Did not know the side of my finger went that deep.
