One of the guys here was cutting back some overgrown blackberry bushes.
This was buried in the weeds. Not sure what it is yet, but it weighs a lot for it's size.

Not a rock, but I did cut through a couple just cutting this chunk.

It's red wood but not Redwood.
Hopefully I can get some solid pieces large enough for handle material.
Otherwise there will be some decent ferrule material.

The wood is Manzanita Burl.
I didn't realize that until I cut the 1st rock......I mean chunk of wood.
Fortunately the Manzanita Burl grows in volcanic soil so the rocks aren't very hard.
Manzanita is a shrub that looks like a purple trunk Rhododendron.
Dense, hard wood.
We use it a lot to carve bowls for our galleries.

It didn't grow there. The burl hunters offload truckloads of manzanita on the back of the wood yard where it sits waiting to be pressure washed.
Very likely it was pushed aside and the blackberries grew over it.
Our wood yard with whole burls, slabs and burl caps covers a few acres of the grounds here.

This pile of manzanita burls is about 40 feet long.
These are dirty ones waiting to get washed.

I forgot, you live in a land where the burl is plentiful.

does it need to be stabilized?
It can go either way.
It is extra hard wood, but it takes stabilizing very nicely too.

I was able to get more out of this burl than I thought.
But, I think I will send it to K&G for stabilizing just to play it safe.
When they get back Son and Randy will get first choice, since they asked.

Most of it did not turn out. Cracks appeared after it was stabilized.
There are 2 sets of scales in the web store.
Here is a link. (http://www.burlsource.us/servlet/the-Bookmatched-SCALES-cln-Stabilized-Wood-Scales/Categories)
