View Full Version : Harner/McLean Petty/Suji(?)
07-08-2013, 02:27 PM
Guys, as you know, I'm a knife designing addict. With the amazing demand and success (and trust me, result) of the parers, I've worked on something for an "addition" to the parers. I find myself often reaching for a long petty for trimming and making quick meals. My design, this time around is either of a 185 or 195 petty/suji. Essentially, a slightly taller long petty, with my styling and Butch's magic.
Tentatively, we are gauging interest, and would like to know if you all might be into this project.

I might be in on this.
07-08-2013, 02:37 PM
Definitely interested. 195 is a good length for me.
07-08-2013, 03:01 PM
I'd be interested in a 195 too.
07-08-2013, 03:06 PM
185 for me would be cool.
07-08-2013, 03:55 PM
Yes, I think that is a very useful blade range. I've been trying to decide between a 180 0r 210 petty for my next knife and the 195 would fall nicely into place. Thanks Lefty.

195 sounds great. Is this a remake of the famous Rodrigue Pettysuki?
07-08-2013, 06:07 PM
I'd be interested

I'd make it 210. Almost by definition a knife like this is an all-rounder so if it's a little longer it's more useful and it's not like it's bulky or anything

Hmmm. Thanks for the input, guys. I'll take a look and see what feels right. If I ever get a chance today, I'll post a sketch.
However, keep the comments coming.

I would like to see 195mm, it's a size that's not offered unless it's a custom
07-08-2013, 08:14 PM
I may be interested, depending on profile, I've been looking for a great utility knife for a long time.

I would be interested in a 185

I'm interested as well. I have a 210 suisin inox that I absolutely love. Would be interested in a 210 that's a little taller and maybe a tad thicker, though not like knuckle clearing high most likely. Would be great to pitch this as both an at home all-arounder as well as a perfect line knife. To me, 210 would be the right length as it could easily serve as a line slicer at that length.
I would be interested in a 195 or 210.

Please put me down as interested.

Sorry guys. I'm playing catch-up right now. Between the crazy flooding, and all that came with it at work, the lack of sleep, and now trying to get orders out, my design post has taken a back seat. I'm hoping to get a fair bit done before we leave for vacation on Friday night....
07-10-2013, 06:45 PM
I would alos be interested in on of these.
07-10-2013, 07:40 PM
195 would work for me!
07-11-2013, 10:27 AM
Great! Thanks for the input, guys. I'll be sending Butch a few sketches, and since this isn't a preorder type of situation, and I really do think 190mm is a fantastic, underproduced length, I think we'll be going with that. Heel height is looking like it's gong to be about 35mm. How's that for everyone?
07-12-2013, 04:24 AM
Well, you've Got my attention...
I'd be interested in a 185! Taller height sounds intriguing

Sounds like an interesting work horse. I might be up for one as well instead of the parer.
08-28-2013, 09:36 AM
Please count me in!!!!!
08-29-2013, 03:37 AM
I'm interested as always

Great news, everyone. This directly resulted in a knife that you all saw get sold just a couple days ago. Butch took the design and decided to go with an 8" blade, but my design was true in the rest of it. Butch's expertise and talent turned out this one, on top:
Long story short, we're doing a run of these, and we think they are the perfect line knife. We will be going ahead with a small batch, with the price being $450. If you are interested, and I mean seriously interested, please let me know!
Tom, I am definitely interested, pls count me in. I will hold off the parer since I already have one ordered from Del.

10-12-2013, 05:10 PM
Will there be different handle options?
10-12-2013, 08:26 PM
We could arrange handle choices, for sure!
10-13-2013, 02:27 PM
V1P and apathetic, I tried to respond to your messages, but you both have full inboxes. Try me again when you clear them out. :)
Tom, Inbox cleared, pls send again.
10-13-2013, 03:10 PM
Sorry! All clear now :)
10-13-2013, 04:15 PM

10-24-2013, 10:01 PM
Sorry for the wait on these. Butch is too busy playing with his new toy that he made himself to make knives for us! Haha. Just kidding. He's motoring along, as always, but check out what he's been up to. He decided to make himself a Monster Bush Knife!
10-31-2013, 03:20 PM
Last call on the line knives guys! I have three spoken for (V1P, apathetic, and canadianman (right?)). If you are missing from the list, please post here! If you want one, two more will be ready very shortly! These are almost done!
In, I hope. you ask my handle preference last week.
10-31-2013, 03:35 PM
I should add this sign-up is only until this evening, because of some time constraints. So, LIMITED TIME OFFER! Haha.
10-31-2013, 04:29 PM

Nmko, you're in too - assuming nothing goes completely wrong today with the finishing of these badboys!
The knives are virtually done and i'll have pics today. :) As the handles stand, it goes:
B47 - buckeye
Apathetic - choice of fancy grade walnut, spalted maple, or cocobolo (due to matching saya)
V1P - next choice
Canadianman - next choice
Nmko - last, but still beautiful choice!
The handles on the five are Walnut, cocobolo, buckeye, ironwood and spalted maple (I love this stuff!)
11-01-2013, 04:54 PM
Here they are looking sexy!
11-01-2013, 05:00 PM
Those are some sexy blades! Is the order in the picture from left to right Buckeye, maple, ironwood, walnut, and cocobolo?
11-01-2013, 05:07 PM
I'm not 100% sure which is the maple, and which is the walnut... They all start looking the same. I think the walnut is second, but I could be wrong. I'll find out for sure. :)
Here's a close up of the handles:
Feel free to say which are your top two choices, so we can sort the handles out. :)
11-01-2013, 05:22 PM
Well since i dnt know which is either also but my two top choices would be
1, 2nd from the left
2, 2nd from the right
but since i am third in line, if both of those go I will go for the cocobolo
11-01-2013, 06:09 PM
Ok, I was right (not sure why I started doubting myself, but meh).
Left to right is:
Buckeye, walnut, ironwood, spalted maple, and cocobolo.
I'd like to get these sorted out as soon as we can, so they can get to you guys and be worked like crazy, as soon as possible!
That Ironwood.... amazing!
11-02-2013, 05:44 AM
They look sweet!
