View Full Version : Harner/McLean Parer Round Two

09-17-2013, 03:31 PM
Butch and I are doing a very limited second run of these badboys. They are now HT'd, but will still be a few weeks away. However, because of amazing demand for the first batch, I'm going to steal a page out of Bob Kramer's book and hold a draw to get a chance to purchase one. I know it sounds crazy, but I feel it's the fairest way to give people a fair shake at getting one. For a quick refresher, they're CTS-XHP, hardened to ~61hrc. Price is $135, with $85 due if your name is drawn. The rest at time of completion. :)

I'll be doing the classic, "Sign here and use a random number generator" method. We'll be holding the draw until Saturday, September 21st, at around noon.

Sign up here, guys. I hope this comes across as fun, because that's the goal. :)

I have one from the first batch. I love it and considering I barely ever use a paring knife at work, I am amazed how much I use it now. One of those, how did I live without this before? deals. It helps that I also have a saya from Lefty for it and I keep it in my pocket at all times.

I would be "in" for the fun of it, but I will cede my spot to someone who doesn't have one already.

Did I miss the drawing?

09-23-2013, 08:23 AM
Nope. Haha. I did! I was working, and figured I'd have time, but we were run off our feet on Saturday. It slipped my mind, completely. Geez, I need a holiday! :)

Drawing is coming up within the next hour or so.

Last chance.........

how many knives are available?

09-23-2013, 09:27 AM
We're starting with three, and will be adding as we can. Not very many, but I can't monopolize Butch's time too much....

09-23-2013, 09:36 AM
Here are the first three (there might be more in another drawing). The numbers coincide with your first post in the thread, stating "I'm in", or something along those lines.

Fran Redina

Congrats, guys. These are sweet little knives! We can finalize the deets soon, but for now, know that you three have official "dibs". :)

Thanks for playing, guys!

09-23-2013, 10:03 AM
Yes! I never win anything! Thanks guys!

Grats guys.

09-23-2013, 11:50 AM

09-24-2013, 12:04 AM
Congrats to the winners.

Will the current list automatically roll to the next distribution or will we need to see each thread?

09-24-2013, 05:33 AM
I'm going to pull more names from here, for more of these, if and when I get the go ahead on more of them. Technically, people could toss their name in the hat today, for the remainder of this batch (if more are made this time around).

09-24-2013, 05:59 AM
This is awesome. Too bad I didn't see this thread earlier. Please add me to the list if possible! Thanks!

Butch is insane. I hope to own one of his knives in the future. Congrats to any and all that get into this raffle

10-06-2013, 12:45 PM
i'm in, if there's another drawing

10-07-2013, 09:31 PM
Ok, guys. It looks like one more will be squeaked in, and I will hold the drawing for the fourth parer tomorrow, around NOON. Same rules apply, and if you are in I this thread, already, that counts as your entry, but it must be your first post in the thread to be a winner. Last chance to sign up is now (well, tomorrow before noon, EST).

Also, the winners of the drawing need to sort this out as civilly as possible. There are two buckeye burl, one "somewhat curly" koa, and one cocobolo available. If you his can't sort it out in a fair and hopefully entertaining way by the time of the drawing (number four gets the last one available), I'll pull names and handle materials (then you can trade amongst yourselves, or whatever. :D

Thanks guys!

10-08-2013, 01:52 PM
The winner of the draw is... #30

Send me a pm if you still want in, and we can sort out the details, Adam.

Thanks again, guys.

10-08-2013, 07:36 PM
FranRedina, Brainsausage, Iceman91 and cookinstuff - here are the first three parers, with the last one being similar to the buckeye up top. It goes, from top to bottom: buckeye burl, cocobolo, (somewhat) curly koa.

Now figure out who gets what, or else! These are going to be shipped soon (so I need all of you to PM me with info, etc).

Thanks, guys.

10-09-2013, 12:15 AM
cool beans! Thanks Tom! I would certainly still like it.

10-09-2013, 10:21 AM
Alright, I haven't heard anything from one guy in a while, so I'm trying to decide the best way to go about this, but I might just have to pick another person.

Also, I'm wondering if there is any interest in another run of these badboys. PLEASE, let me know if you guys would like us to make another batch.

10-09-2013, 11:15 AM
Best thing to do is pick post #51 and send the one on the bottom. :clown:

And if a batch is four knives I think another couple batches is mandatory.

10-09-2013, 01:19 PM
Disregard part of my last PM Tom... I'd like the buckeye if at all possible.

10-09-2013, 01:25 PM
Too late, some guy named Josh has dibs. :D

10-09-2013, 01:58 PM
Too late, some guy named Josh has dibs. :D

I'm gonna ouch that guy right in the neck- oh wait...

10-10-2013, 10:23 AM
Ok guys, I'm pulling two more names for these. Two of the winners never responded to my messages, and I even got all weird and nosey and checked to see their last activity (after PMs), so they missed their chances. (Sorry).

I'll let you know who gets them in a minute.

10-10-2013, 10:24 AM
I'm still interested

10-10-2013, 10:27 AM
Alright, winners are NoChop and the write-in ballot. I'll email him, and let you all know.

Chris, if you're still interested, the buckeyes are gone, but cocobolo and koa are available.

NO ChoP!
10-10-2013, 10:29 AM
Heck yah, even though I just committed to a second parer from Del, lol...everyone needs three kick@ss parers, right? I'll take the koa!

edit: actually I like them both; I'll take whatever is left.

10-10-2013, 10:31 AM
Hahaha. Ummm. Weird timing, but done! :D

I'll send you a pm, Chris.

10-10-2013, 10:43 AM
That's it. I'm taking a day off. I can't reach the "write-in", but AJ, if you read this, send me an email.

Is it too early to start drinking?

10-10-2013, 12:25 PM
Lefty: is there any left, I am ready to buy one if there is.

10-10-2013, 12:28 PM
Sorry, this group is all paid for, and ready to go. There WILL be another batch, and I'll have to decide how to go about that one. However, I think the contest has run its course....

10-10-2013, 12:46 PM
No problemo Lefty, I will keep an eye on the next one.

10-10-2013, 01:12 PM
Thanks for working on another run

10-10-2013, 01:47 PM
No problemo Lefty, I will keep an eye on the next one.

Did you see the thread that Del Ealy started about making a limited run of new parers if your interested?

10-10-2013, 02:02 PM
I love the look of Del's parers, and they are a good option as well. Very, very different beasts, but I sure want one!

10-10-2013, 02:50 PM
Argh, now I can't decide which one to go for! Buy both? :pullhair:

10-10-2013, 02:56 PM

10-10-2013, 03:01 PM
Argh, now I can't decide which one to go for! Buy both? :pullhair:

Since you can jump on the boat for the Ealy now go for and get the Harner down the road...that's my suggestion

10-10-2013, 03:26 PM
Since you can jump on the boat for the Ealy now go for and get the Harner down the road...that's my suggestion

you guys are killing me with your suggestions, but I'll bite LOL! Just put down a deposit for a stainless damascus Ealy with burgundy linen micarta. I wanted a new design one.

Lefty : Any chance of making me a saya for it?

10-10-2013, 03:50 PM
I plan on buckling down and getting a few done this week, so quite possibly, yes. Besides, then I might get to see how they are in person. Haha

10-11-2013, 07:51 AM

That sounds an excellent suggestion but for the people on the other side of the fence as well... :lol2:
I'm already down for an Ealy parer, how can I join this list?

Ditto. Brilliant little bugger!

10-16-2013, 10:06 PM
Thanks, guys! It's great to see my design being well received. Butch makes wicked products, but the fact that you like them...well, that's awesome!

10-16-2013, 10:54 PM

The pumpkin killer. The knife is much better at this than I am. :cool2:

10-17-2013, 08:13 AM
Awesome! Dave, can I use this picture on Instagram and possibly my site for Halloween? I can make it worth it...in love.

10-17-2013, 10:01 AM
Tom, Use away, I need love. Did I mention I like the knife?

10-17-2013, 10:09 AM
Hooray! Haha.
Nah, you didn't mention it.... Actually, I'd love some real reviews/feedback on these, guys. I expect these to be regular items (whenever I can get Butch to make them :D), so letting guys know what they should expect would be great!

NO ChoP!
10-17-2013, 11:26 AM
Here's my curly koa with Brazilian cherry saya...

My initial impression is this thing is beastly sharp ootb. Sharpest stainless knife I've ever received. The handle is done well, and the bump out at the end really helps to wield the smaller knife. I was a bit oft put by the up-sweep of the blade at first, but I rather like it now. It's much more subtle in person, and really helps with knuckle clearance if using on a board. Also, it doesn't hinder in-hand work much, if not at all. The pointiness is probably my favorite thing. It works well with the length of the blade, making it much more versatile than just an in-hand parer. I'm usually not a proponent of using pettys as parers and vis versa, but this really does work well for both, albeit a smallish petty.

I've tried a fair deal of parers in my time, and haven't been in love with too many. The Mac, Kramer and the Hattori forum are about the best I've tried. I'm hoping my new profile Del will be up there, as the shape of the original profile keeps it from being an all-arounder (ever try to supreme a grapefruit with one?). Also, I really need to get my hands on one of those funky HHH's...

This is probably one of the best...

10-25-2013, 04:53 AM
I'm in if this is still open. I know I shouldn't but if my number should pop up I'll just have to deal with it :)

11-15-2013, 07:06 PM
Two more parers are done! Anton, and bear1889, you guys are up, if you want curly koa!

Also, this might just be going to a friend of ours, in Sweden...maybe. :D

Butch's talent makes me throw up...and like it!

Nice handle!!! (Alright, I guess I guess it's time to step-up my game.) Love that!!!

11-19-2013, 06:16 PM
Ok, guys. One koa parer is available. You know the drill - first "I want it" gets it!

$135, shipped in US, or Canada. International pays difference in shipping.

11-19-2013, 06:17 PM
Chek out the crazy colour change, depending on lighting. Sexy, or what? :)

11-19-2013, 06:27 PM
I wants!

11-19-2013, 07:00 PM
me second

11-19-2013, 07:01 PM
Hmmm. I posted you were up before, but you must have missed it. We have a couple more in the works...

11-19-2013, 07:08 PM
You know what, he can have this one. I really shouldn't be getting one more parer. Not right now anyway. Really nice one though!

11-19-2013, 07:12 PM
Well, more will come soon. You two can duke it out. :D

11-21-2013, 10:04 AM
So...ummm...is this going out to Jigert or to Anton? I'm wanting to get this sent out today. :D

11-21-2013, 10:30 AM
Send it to Anton. Now!

11-22-2013, 05:13 AM
Add me to the lottery plz. Been looking for a nice parer.
