View Full Version : Paring knife prebuy

Delbert Ealy
10-09-2013, 03:36 PM
After looking over the work I have to do yet, I have decided to do a prebuy for the paring knives. This will be for parings with a single handle material. I have two model parings the original and the new one. The steel choices are AEBL, or carbon Damascus, or stainless Damascus. The cost for the AEBL is $110 shipped ($120 international) and for the Damascus $180 ($190 international)
For the prebuy, I am asking for a $50 deposit for each knife you order, even if it's a Damascus one. Please Paypal your deposit to delbert@ealyknives.com with your forum name, so I can keep track of everyone. Also please send me a pm with your handle wood choice and what model and material you would like. Please, no buckeye requests, unless you can provide the material yourself, I am out of it right now. If you wish to provide handle material for you knife I'm fine with that, and I'll give you some credit on the final payment. I will begin making them November first and will begin shipping them the week after. It will be first come first finished.
In the meantime I will be finishing my Damascus order and completing the knives on my waiting list. I will also be working on a batch of Damascus for kitchen knives, so I have some stock to work with.
I decided to do this to fill some recent requests and also to get some Capitol together to buy steel and handle material, my supplies of both are running quite low.
It will also be fun to make some knives again, after a whole summer of making Damascus.
Thanks,
Del

The top ones are the new design and the very bottom one is the original design.
Both knives work very well, but the new design is a bit longer and narrower.

Some of your handles, from pictures, have more pronounced flats than others...almost an octagonal cross-section. Is that just my eyes?

Delbert Ealy
10-11-2013, 03:54 PM
They are octagonal in cross-section, with softened edges. But I think the differences are in my picture taking. All of the knives I have pictured are made in the same way, with minor variations, but essentially the same.

Some progress pics, laying the design out marking them for the holes to drill and then cutting them out.
There are two dozen in this batch, only ten cut out clean, the rest still in pairs. I'll cut the rest of them and then clean the profiles up with the grinder. Then its drilling and chamfering the holes.

Heres a quick shot of some finished blades as well as some with handles attached.
A quick announcement as well, the stainless Damascus blades will be delayed a bit due to several factors, one is that the steel is out for grinding and isn't back yet and the other is that I had a fatal incident with my metal cutting bandsaw, fatal to the saw that is :viking:
The result of this is that some blades may be finished slightly out of order. The carbon Damascus blades will be done in the next batch, as soon as my saw is replaced.
I will be contacting you for final payment over the next few days. I expect to be shipping knives from the first batch on Monday, and perhaps even on Saturday.

All the packages of those who paid in full are ready now and will be shipped in the morning.
At the suggestion of my postmaster I used the label service through paypal for my international customers shipments. It took a bit to get the first one done, mostly just learning and the computer giving me fits. I have to say that I like it a lot though. no more worrying about which customs form I have to fill out and working on it at the counter. After I figured it out I was doing them in 3 minutes. I may even start to do this for the domestic customers as well. This time i'll only be a few minutes at the post office and I can get back to making more knives sooner. :viking:
I may even be able to get some more handles glued up tomorrow.

I have ten more of the AEBL blades done and ready for handles, I'm going to finish those. I have the stainless Damascus done and am sending that out for grinding. While I'm waiting for that to get done, I'll be working on the carbon Damascus blades. There are only a few of them so I'm hoping they will be done by the time the stainless Damascus is back. Then I'll do the stainless Damascus ones and the remainder of the AEBL blades.
Thanks,

what is the damage on the remainder per knife?

The remainder will be $60 for AEBL or $130 for Damascus of either variety for domestic, international is an extra $10.

Had a hitch today, I was profiling some parings when my grinder quit. Turns out I blew a fuse in the controller. So the grinder is down til Friday.
I still have work to do, just not what I had planned.
I wound up with a day of frustration and stress. :(
Hopefully the next time I post it will be better news.

So it turns out it was worse than I thought, have to replace the motor on the grinder. I have the replacement on the way. I did get the stainless Damascus back today. I have all the carbon Damascus blades heat treated. I am in the process of cutting more AEBL blades out and I will be doing the same with the stainless Damascus soon. While waiting for the grinder motor, I'll be cutting handle material for all of these as well. It will be some furious effort on my part when the motor comes in, just know that in spite of the difficulties I've had this week I'm still doing all I can to get these out in time.
Thanks,
Del

Well my new motor was delivered today, the installation went well and I have been putting it through the paces. I have spent the last four hours making a big pile of dust, grinding out profiles. I'll heat treat tomorrow, all the stainless and stainless Damascus blades. That will take up most of the day tomorrow and then I'll start finishing knives. I'm going out later to work for a few more hours tonight as well. I have a bunch of foil baggies to make to use for heat treating.
Time to make dinner.

the stainless blades after coming out of heat treat and tempering.
I now have all the blades rough ground. I'll be finishing them in batches of 6 or so at a time, and i'll be sending out payment pm's in the same number. I plan on a busy week. For those of you with addresses in your paypal account, I'll be using that a lot and you should get notification through there of shipment. Starting on Tuesday I am planning on shipping every day this week.
Things don't always go as planned, but please know I am making every effort to get these done and with the same quality as always.

Hey guys, I am working on them every day, just finished a few more to ship tomorrow. Sent some out today, I just had to drop them off, but the post office was jam packed. I plan on shipping finished knives every day. I just got out of the shop and it's close to midnight here. I just wish I had someone that could pack label and ship them for me so I could spend more time in the shop getting them finished. I'd let my wife do it, but none of you would get what you asked for if I did that. I'm also foregoing taking pics at this point, trying to get as much shop time as possible.
Thanks Xoomg for posting the pic, I'm glad it got there safe.

Hi Del,

I got mine last weekend. it arrived safely at my parents place in Paris and i was also lucky as i didn't pay any extra customs - that wouldnt had happened in denmark -. The knife is a little wonder, I already used it yesterday and it performed great. Plus I love the mango :)

Thanks a lot and good luck with the rest of them.

You know, well I guess you don't know, paying for and printing USPS labels at home is a piece of cake. Print them on 8.5 x 11 paper, cut out the label and tape it to the box. Make arrangements with your local carrier to pick up your packages. I do it all the time. Wouldn't want to send anyone to the PO this time of the year.

I do that, but I don't have a local carrier, only a po box. My town is so small they only have only boxes. There is carrier service, but it is done through a town 20 miles away. My post office is 4 miles away. Also I have to have the international ones stamped at the post office too. I just started doing this, but even dropping them off I wait in line.

Should these knives be sharpened using japanese knife angle or german knife angle?

XooMG
12-24-2013, 01:12 AM
I think you should choose an angle that you think is appropriate for your use. My knife came with a high angle and seemed convexed, so I couldn't hit the edge at all without quite a bit of work or an extremely high (30-40 degrees per side) angle near the heel, so I'm resetting the bevel closer to what I feel comfortable with. I've been told by a few other users that the knives really benefit from a newly set bevel, but others seem happy with theirs out of the box, so I guess there might be some variability there.

Shipping out five today. Got slowed down by a bad cold this weekend, and having the wife and kids with it too. Just finished printing labels for shipping. My list is getting short now. Yours will be this week. I may be able to finish them all by the end of the week.
In reguards to the sharpening, I may have sent out a few with steeper angles than I intended. I free hand them on the belt sander, and I try to be consistant with them, but I don't always hit that mark. If yours isn't cutting like you think it should, try lowering the angle a bit. It should help.
Thanks,
Del

So I checked over my list and I have 20 to go. I said earlier that I hoped to finish by the end of the week with all of those, but it's a few more than I realized. I am now setting the goal of having them finished ten days from now. Those of you that have paid in full are at the top of the list and I will be sending out payment notices shortly for the rest of you. I send these out a day or two early so that I am able to ship the knives as soon as they are finished.
I'm still running with only half a tank, because of the crud I've got, but I'm still hoping to make some serious progress.
Thanks,

I now have 21 finished blades on my bench the past two days work. They are ready for handles. I start that phase tomorrow. Five at a time, and I'll start shipping finished ones on Saturday. Lots of cutting up handle material and drilling holes tomorrow. And lots of dust too. I am glad the congestion is gone, and the sneezing is almost stopped. Sneezing into a filter mask really bites.
