View Full Version : HHH 240 Prebuy Saya Making Challenge

greasedbullet
11-22-2013, 01:50 PM
Lets have a competition to see who can make the best saya for the 240mm Prebuy Gyuto. You won't need power tools if you don't have any so just about anyone can participate.

If anyone would like advice or help I am more than happy to walk you through it. I am sure there are other members that would be happy to help too.

2 weeks after the knives are delivered will be the cutoff point for submissions. Then we will all vote to see who made the best saya for their knife.

Rules.
1. Due to forum rules: Amateurs only. So unfortunately I will not be participating in the challenge.

2. Be creative.

3. Have fun.

If there are any questions or anything should be added let me know.
-Mike

Just out of curiosity, any restrictions on materials?

Nothing radioactive allowed.

But more seriously I suggest keeping the saya relatively coordinated with the knife.

My bad rosewood is a type of redwood maybe?

HHH Knives
11-24-2013, 03:45 PM
Rosewood is amazing. Here are a few pictures of some of the scale sets that will be used on the HHH 240mm Gyutos.

HHH Knives

If anyone needs some rosewood for the saya's let me know. I may know a guy who knows a guy. ;)

HHH Knives
11-24-2013, 08:57 PM
OK. Im gona offer a few sets of rosewood Saya wood. Im thinking a 10.5 X 2.5 X 1/8" book matched slabs. The pictures above are a GREAT representation and these saya slabs will come from the same block of rosewood as these scales did!

So, the blade on these knives will be 240mm tip to heel. and approx 50mm wide at the heel. Is this size adequate?

greasedbullet
11-24-2013, 09:06 PM
I would do 2.75 inches just to be safe. Also what is the spine thickness at its widest point? I will almost definitely be taking you up on this.

HHH Knives
11-24-2013, 09:21 PM
2.5mm is the spine thickness

I should be able to do 2.75. width.

OK so I got 1 almost for sure.

I think I have enough extra material large enough for these to make 7 to 10 sets. So lets try and start a list.

32.50 a set + shipping and because I only have a limited amount. one set per person until everyone who would like a set gets a set. Then if there are some left your welcome to a second or even third set.

This is gona be too cool!
God Bless

If this is anyone's first time using rosewood, please use a respirator! I didn't use one until about the 5th handle I ever made. I was using Tamarind and found out it is poisonous.
Best idea to use a respirator at all times, but especially with rosewood and a few others. Don't be dumb and hard-headed like me!

I will have a few options as well as the rosewood ones I already promised.

I have and do use rosewood and cocobolo etc. without any problems. Some can be or become allergic to it. and ALL should wear a respirator when working with it. OR any other wood for that matter. A small paper style face one will do the trick and can be picked up at any auto store or home depot. etc.

Safety first!

As promised, here is an outline of the HHH knife. It is scanned in as a PDF here (http://jvanistri.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/HHH.pdf)

As a note, dimensions should be taken from the inside of the tracing

Lefty
01-03-2014, 10:53 AM
Coming from experience, it would be beneficial to get the tracing all the way into the front of the handle, and have exact thickest spine measurements (and where this thickness starts and stops). With this info, a friction fit is possible. :)

jvanis
01-03-2014, 11:17 AM
Looks like I get to go buy some calipers, the edge of the paper is representative of the handle start. I laid the blade on the counter, butted the handle up to it to make the trace.

Will see what I can come up with over the weekend.

The hole is the standard size for an ebony pin, also. I was thinking of drilling a small hole in a pin head, attaching a ring, and the lanyard to that...but so far, it's really not that difficult to work with.

Thanks everyone...and no, I'm not taking on any work, lol.

There's some old handles, just a ton of scrap crap. Lot's of epoxy too. I don't actually have a HHH knife to try and fit this to, I used the template provided. I hope it fits!
I'm donating this one to someone, if anyone wants it!
