View Full Version : Knife Lotteries

Marko Tsourkan

Here are the guidelines, folks. Please review them before you register for a lottery.

- There will be one stock knife per week
- Up to 25 entries in the lottery
- There will be an announcement and a link in my subforum to Google docs registration.
I will post a link with registration on Mondays, at 7pm, and the drawing will be held on Fridays, at 7pm or sightly after
- Entries will have to be submitted weekly (knives will vary from week to week, no same knife two weeks in a row)
- I will decide what knives to make each week and make an announcement in the beginning of that week.
- To be eligible, you have to be a KKF forum member with a minimum of 10 forum posts (you will be asked to list your forum post count) regardless if you have a knife on order with me or not
- If one wins, one won't be eligible to participate in another lottery for 6 months
- If one wins and decides to cancel a custom order knife, no problem (one can cancel at any time before I get to work on the knife)
- Should one win and decide one doesn't want a knife, another random selection will run, if the next person decides he/she doesn't want it either (just in case) the knife will be offered on first-come-first-served basis
- I will ask my wife to run the drawing to assure impartiality on my part
- Knives will have same 7 day return warranty as my custom knives
- These guidelines are a subject to change

Any chance that in future we'd be able to get pics at the time of posting? And how does international postage work?

I will post the WIP pics on the knife through the week and the completed knife on Friday. The drawing will be held on Friday at 7pm EST and I will post the winner shortly after that.

If someone wins, then decides they don't want the knife, does that still mean they can't enter for 6 months?

Marko Tsourkan
01-24-2014, 06:03 PM
The knife comes with 7 days return.

I put this condition, as I trying to limit lotteries to people who want that particular knife and create decent odds for the participants. I will see how things go after 2-3 knives I produce for lotteries, conditions are subject to change (all are), so I don't exclude shortening or even removing the six month condition for the winners.

Thanks,

Marko

Hi All,
the drawing was to be between 7pm and 9pm, as this involves my wife and I gave her a window of time, just in case she is in the middle of something.

I sent her a list of everybody who participated and will post the winner shortly. I am using this random pick generator:

Here is the knife from the last week's lottery. 255mm gyuto in 52100 with cocobolo/ebony handle and brass guard. Almost done with it, better pics are coming likely tomorrow.

21913

Next week's knife is 325mm suji in AEB-L. S grind. Koa handle with contracting end and front of the handle. Brass guard.

Below is the pic of the blank. I would like to ask $630 for it. Size, Western handle require a lot of work. Price includes shipping.

21912

If you would like to enter the lottery, for 325mm suji, please use the following link

I imagine myself looking like a bad ass carrying this in a saya, walking from the car to the kitchen I work at. Random people would think I'm off to assassinate someone or something.

Lol, it sounded cool in my head.

This knife is not for me but hope someone buys it and post pictures. Nice one,Marko.

By the way, the strop just arrived, can't wait to give it a go tonight.

Marko Tsourkan
01-28-2014, 08:59 AM
I am going to replace the 325mm suji with 250mm Western handle gyuto with a koa handle with contrasting accents, as there seems to be little interest for this long a suji. I will put on hold the scimitar and the bread knife for the reasons that preparation (cutting a blank, profiling, heat treating) takes a long time and I can't justify working on it if there is little interest. Long knives require more time, not to mention the S grind geometry being much more time consuming than say any form of convex.

I will use the list from the last week to do the drawing for the 250mm gyuto. If anybody from the last week wouldn't want to participate, please send me an email.

Thanks.

marc4pt0
01-28-2014, 09:14 AM
Grrrrr. I was actually worried that if for some chance I won last week's lottery that I would lose out on the scimitar. That's the one I was really excited about, but now understanding the scope of labor and the necessary pricing behind it, maybe it's still out of reach for Me..

Von blewitt
01-28-2014, 09:24 AM
I'm still in from last week, thanks Marko

Marko Tsourkan
01-28-2014, 09:41 AM
I have said this before, S grind takes about 30% more time than a convex grind, plus it requires a hand finish. The lengh of a knife, even as narrow as a suji, also makes a project more laborious. Western handle with contrasting accents (joinery), spreads the work on the handle over 2 days. When I add everything, for the price I charge for these knives, I don't use my time as productively as I could.

Here is the list for 1/31/2014 drawing
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ani6qDqq4yZDdHUtNE8tdVpFNEpjZ09xSTZ0TG90d Xc&usp=drive_web#gid=0

PS: I am considering offering stock knives in convex geometry and making S geometry only custom.

I am going to do one more lottery knife and then take a break. By the time I resume lottery, I should have the feedback on the scimitar, and it will be the knife I will make after the break. I would say 2-3 weeks break after February 7.

February 7 knife will be 250mm Western gyuto in 52100. I am not sure what material to use for a handle, but it will be something different than cocobolo or koa. $510 shipped in the ConUs. International shipping will be credited with $10.

Below is the link to the sign-up sheet. If you wish not to participate in the drawing, please remove yourself from the list. I copied the last week's list (minus the winner).

I am resuming offering weekly knife lotteries. Still awaiting the feedback on the scimitar, so for the time being will keep making 250mm gyutos.

Below are 2nd week's lottery knife (with koa handle) and this week's lottery knife (One previous drawing's knife is still in works). This week's is the one with Lignum Vitae handle.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ani6qDqq4yZDdHNNNTVJdnBhUTN1djNnS3dMUmZEY lE&usp=drive_web#gid=0

If you signed up for the last drawing, you are still on the list. If you are not interested in participating this time, please remove yourself or let me know and I will remove you.

Lignum Vitae is an interesting wood. It has some figure, has a wonderful smell and a very natural touch to it. Over time it will develop either dark red/brown or green patina.

Asking $500 shipped in ConUs (international at cost - $10 credit).

I will close the list at noon tomorrow and will have a drawing in the afternoon.

The knife for your consideration is 257mm Western handle gyuto. 52100 steel, Shigefusa profile, S geometry. The figure on the ziricote handle is pretty wild, reminiscent of a figure on desert ironwood. Pictures tomorrow.

Knife's weight is 222g. There is a small scratch on the face, not sure how I put it on. Will polish it out before sending the knife out. The leather saya is optional, but it will delay shipping by a couple of weeks.

This will conclude Shigefusa profile for lottery knives. If I do some more, the next will be straight Masamoto.

Just want to add that with this lottery knives run I have accomplished what I set out to - make a number of western handled knives to get some experience with new handle type and make adjustment to the grind for the Western type. I got some feedback and have already incorporated it and will make minute tweaks as I get more feedback. So far the responses have been positive on the ergonomics of the handle, so the shape is here to stay.

Now that I am comfortable with the Western handle type, I can shift my attention to other work. I am going put off some new work (miroshi deba, bread knife) as I recognize that each type will require some investment in time and I can't afford it now.

That said, I am back to my custom order list and Western handle knife is now an option.

Thanks,

Marko

March 21st lottery winner is Marc4pt0. Congratulation.

Marko

PS: It's funny how chance works. In one of my earlier lottery drawings, cclin posted something to the effect of that he really was hoping to win, and he won, and Marc posted that he wasn't rolled over from last lottery, and he also won. Maybe that what you guys should do to bust your chances of winning. Just saying... Jokes aside, I specifically ask my wife do the drawings, so the lottery stays unbiased.

I also want to add that I really like how ziricote finishes and feels in a hand. It seems to have a very good gripp to it after a high polish, that I rarely find on natural and stabilized woods.

I am going to do 330 scimitar in 52100 with ziricote handle. Price $630 shipped. A leather sheath is optional and will delay shipping by about a week. Pics of the blank shortly and specs info is to follow.

S grind and hand-rub finish. The knife is heat treated for best combination of sharpness and edge stability, and will be ground to about .015 on the edge (the preference seems to be for leaving some metal on the edge). The difficulty grinding this shape, the length, the Western handle - factors that influence the cost of this blade. 7 days return and lifetime warranty for craftsmanship and materials under normal use.

I will do the drawing on the 27th of March at 3pm.

Thanks,

Marko

Huw should be disqualified due to the fact that he already has too many of the awesome knives.

It's a well known fact that awesome knives can get very lonely. I try to maintain a happy & healthy population :D

Actually I ground one for practice today. Left .015 on the edge, kind of felt weird to leave this much metal on the edge, but per your advice, did just that.

Ooops...
confused the dates. Sending out the list for the drawing.

Will have results momentarily.

Marko

PS: I mentioned in a Scimitar thread post that I ground one just yesterday for practice to refresh my skill. I have a US made scimitar as a reference knife, and I have a some good input on a scimitar from pro users. I will combine that with personal preferences of the lottery winner.
