View Full Version : More Jnats: 4 Aoto for sale

07-11-2014, 06:52 PM
I'm selling 4 of my aoto. All are good specimens and have been used very lightly. Members often would call these 'blue' aoto, even though 'ao' already means blue (aoto='blue stone').

Here they are L-R:

1) 'Honyama' aoto (because that's what it says on the label)
2) Vintage Aono #1
3) Vintage Aono #2
4) Okabana

Details below each photo.......

1) 'Honyama' aoto. This one is on the harder side for aoto, which is often a sign of better quality, though it isn't too hard. It's extremely clean and uniform, meaning that it's also good for razors. A few other members seem to have this type, including a razor user I know, and there's a larger version which I think has been sold by Tosho and a smaller version from Metalmaster. This is the smaller version: 182x58x38mm. Price including shipping to most places: $85. (Really good option to try an aoto for a low price.)

2) Vintage Aono #1. I got this from JNS half a year ago, when 3 appeared and sold out almost instantly. Like the 'Honyama' this one is on the harder side for aoto ,though it is not too hard. Take a look at the original JNS listing for a description: http://www.japanesenaturalstones.com/vintage-blue-aoto/?setCurrencyId=3. The stone pictured in the listing is the one I'm selling now. Size: 197x58x58mm. Price including shipping to most places: $190.

3) Vintage Aono #2. I'm a bit of a stone collector and, after getting Vintage Aono #1 above, I found this stone in Japan and got it to compare to the first. As the sticker/label shows, it is from the same original wholesaler as the JNS one; it also performs identically and so must be from the same batch. The difference compared to #1 is that this one is slightly bigger and has a nicer shape on the sides. Size: 199x59x59mm. Price including shipping to most places: $185.

Two notes:

The stickers: if you didn't know 'vintage' stones are often sold with their old labels still on and the Japanese like this, even if the paper is worn. It's an indicator of origin. Some people lacquer them on to preserve them but I haven't done this; you should if you don't want yours to fall off. When you see stones with labels like this, a good guess is that they're from the 1950s or 60s.)

'Aono': I found out through the Japanese seller that #2 and #3 are Aono, meaning they're from one of the famous Kyoto aoto mines.

4) Okabana: Okabana is one of the other famous Kyoto aoto mines. This is the biggest of the 4 stones and a bit softer and coarser than the others. It gives off nice slurry and so is good for creating a uniform finish. Poor quality aoto dry out quickly, but this one, like the others above, does not. Probably my fav of the 4 here based on feel. Size: 212x63x58mm. Price including shipping to most places: $200.

As always, please PM or post if you have any questions.

A mini-clear out, yes - probably in order to get something new!

Of the koppa, the Shinden and Hakka are sold. The ohira is still available; all 3 are different, but the ohira is probably my fav of the 3.

What range is the ohira ?

Apologies if anyone PM'd and found my PM box full before.

3) Vintage Aono #2 -- now SPF

That leaves only one left, the 1) 'Honyama' aoto. That one is a very good deal for the price, is the cleanest kind of aoto I've seen, used by razor nuts, and I think is quite similar in hardness and performance to the 2 vintage ones now sold.

I just bought one of these from Maxim and it leaves an awesome edge on my carbon Gyutos. Highly recommended for a knife finisher. I also intend to use for straights, so a nice dual purpose stone if you are into that kind of thing.
