+1

I hope to see marketing of this on other forums as well. Someone shoud post this at KF, FF and other forums as well.
Id like to see those vendors who are on this forum to post it on their Facebook and in their mails to their customers :)
I know Bill got a lot of friends out there that are eager to help, and if more people join this would be absolutly perfect.

I know this wont solve Bills problems, but Im sure it will give him some time to breath. And I hope he can focus on whats important for him: family and making knives!
Im proud to be a customer of Bill, and Ive had a really nice dialogue with him the last year. He is profesional and really really nice talking to by mail. He puts an effort in making the perfect knive and wont deliver a knife thats not 100% perfect.

Life is more fun helping a fellow member out! Everyone should be proud of joining this fundraiser!

I like to know how much is donated, cause Im pretty unhappy with the focus this got from KKF. No mails, no info on Facebook, no posting on other forums and so on. If donation is to low imo, I will put the Shigefusa on sale in the buy/trade/sell section and donate all the money to Bill Burke and his family.

When Jon Broida had a fundraiser for Heiji and his family, people donated over 5000 USD and there was no prices to win. I hope I don't offend any of the donators in this post: Im extremely happy that you help Bill out. But lack of interest, skills or whatever from KKF forces me to collect as much as possible buy having an auction in Buy/Sell/Trade forum. I am a man of word, but I like to see as much as possible is donated.

So how big is the pot? My actions will be based on this....

Vertigo
10-07-2011, 12:52 PM
So you're threatening to pull one of the giveaways if you aren't satisfied with the arbitrary reserve you've set, after almost ten pages of donations?

That's ******* classy.

oivind_dahle
10-07-2011, 12:57 PM
As I said, Is all about the how big the pot got.

If raised 500 then Im pretty sure nobody is against me getting twice or triple for Bill on S/B/T forum. However, if the pot is big then I have no problem with this fundraiser.....

Im just saying I want to have as much funds to Bill.... And if you think that is classy, then its ok with me :)

I just think Jon Broida did more out of a fundraiser getting 5000 use or more for Heiji. I want the same for Bill..

oivind_dahle
10-07-2011, 01:02 PM
And vertigo, lots of this pages is about the link don't working, and repost from a lot of users..

But if pot is big and we got a lot of donators, Im happy to ship the shig. So I hope I did not offend anybody

May be you should have talked to the people that run the donation before posting here?
Isn't that more efficient?

unkajonet
10-07-2011, 01:11 PM
So...you're comparing family tragedies, putting a monetary value on each one, and now assigning a price tag on something that you had already freely offered? You do realize that by just threatening to pull your giveaway item, you've damaged the feeling of good will and generosity of the community. Not to mention placing Bill and his family in the middle of some weird "price war" at a time when they don't need this.

Yup. Classy.

tk59
10-07-2011, 01:15 PM
I'm not sure if offended is the right word. I think what has been breached is trust. You have broken the trust of every forum member that has taken part in this fundraiser and any other member that has any moral sense. Some of the participants may have been hoping for a chance at owning a nice knife that would otherwise not be within their means to obtain. I hope you reconsider your stance. I find your attitude repugnant and if I were Bill, I would be embarrassed to associate my name with it especially after praising you so highly. Bill Burke: "Oivind you are quite possibly one of the greatest guys I know." This is really about honor.

mr drinky
10-07-2011, 01:42 PM
Also, Oivind, keep in mind that not everybody announces their donation so don't use thread responses as your gauge. I also don't see a deadline in the OP, so two weeks from now things will be different. It has been less than a week so far.

And frankly, I think we should keep the paypal donation button up and sticky it regardless of the drawing. I've donated, and when my a bonus comes my way in November, I will likely donate again if the option still exists. The drawing doesn't matter to me. If I win anything knife related, I will probably just turn around and sell it on SBT and donate that on top of it all.

k.

The BoardSMITH

May I add my two cents worth?

I have never met Bill and if he walked in the door I would have no idea who he is. I am almost in the same financial spot after my wife suffered a mild stroke. Money is tight, I am squeezing every dollar I can and if someone offered me $50 or $500 I would accept it graciously with a lot of thanks. No matter how much is raised, it is the gift that counts not the amount.

My board offer stays no matter how much, or how little, is raised. I freely offered it as a gesture of goodwill and support for a forum member.

bprescot
10-08-2011, 12:29 AM
Hey Oivind. I completely get where you're coming from. At one point you mentioned an auction and with the ability to set a reserve there, you'd have a guaranteed amount to give to Bill provided the Shig sold. This is a free-to-participate raffle, with Donations strongly encouraged. There just isn't the same assurance as a "reserve" in this type of arrangement, and at the end of the day you want to ensure that you get as much help to Bill and his family as possible. If I were you I'd PM Ryan and Dave and have a quick chat over PM. Ultimately whatever you do is up to you, but it might be better to hash it out in private and just post the results. Though it would be neat once we wrap up to know how well this did for any similar events going forward.

Just my $.02

mhlee
10-08-2011, 01:54 AM
I'd like to add a few thoughts. This is from someone who has not donated, but is hoping to if my own money situation improves.

As Salty noted, I am sure there are people who donated without posting their names here who are not intending to participate in the raffle. But, I'd like to say that there are other people in this forum, who may not have the money to donate, but donate time and effort that, if you were to put a price on, would not be insignificant. I am sure that many people do so without any expectation of any return benefit. However, these people, because they are not donating money, do not qualify for your raffle.

You have made it clear that the goodwill and generosity of members supporting Bill is only valued or calculated in terms of money - a certain amount of money. Yet now, even for those people who have donated or will donate money, you are essentially saying that if these people collectively did not donate enough, none of them are entitled to the knife you are donating. It saddens me to see this because it dimishes the spirit of generosity of the members who donated, as well as the spirit of these donations.

I, for one, hope that this is continued for at least another few weeks. I hope to be able to contribute to help Bill and I would also would love to be able to say that you were wrong Oivind.

Oivind's Won't back out, bet he just had a bad day.

Let's keep this up for a good week or two. Not everyone gets a chance to check in every day, some members only once a were or so. I for one check in a few times a week and just spotted this, so let's keep it going.

Oivinds got one good point let's all not just hit the donate link hit the link and spread it! Facebook it, other boards, your email address book...phone a few people you get the idea.

I think we get it Oivind. Your heart is totally in the right place and you want to ensure that Bill gets as much help as possible. For those that have other ways to get the message out, let's start trying to do that! This community has always been amazing in supporting those of us that are in trouble! Oivind, I myself am hurting for $$ and spending every damn minute I have available trying to keep my family fed and housed in the most basic sense of these terms. I simply can't help all people all of the time and I have to chose where and when I expend my resources very carefully. I'm sorry if I haven't put forth the effort you see fit to support this fundraiser but I can assure you that I'm doing all that I can. I resent being singled out as much as I resent you singling out Ryan who is trying his best to help as a volunteer here. IMO you've ruined this fundraiser regardless of how much money is donated. As a result I doubt that we'll ever have such a thing here ever again and that's sad for me to say.

Hey guys. Let's just take a step back here. Whatever we want to do about future efforts like this, let's at least get this one done and as successful as possible! We're here to help Bill first, have a fun-for-everyone raffle second, and everything else falls way after.

Again, just my $.02, but let's hold off on any sort of big decisions or mud-flinging until after we get this effort successful and wrapped up

And, as a humble request, would it be possible to keep this thread related just to the positive thing we're trying to do here? Hey guys. Let's just take a step back here. Whatever we want to do about future efforts like this, let's at least get this one done and as successful as possible! We're here to help Bill first, have a fun-for-everyone raffle second, and everything else falls way after.

Again, just my $.02, but let's hold off on any sort of big decisions until after we get this effort successful and wrapped up

I agree 100%.

Nice post, Captain Asperger. I look forward to next week when you invite everyone to join you in your pool, right before you take a **** in it.

Hey now. "Captain Asperger" wouldn't care if anyone was genuinely interested.

Oivind, I wonder how much of what is going on here is a result of poor expression and cultural differences, filtered through a low context medium like a webforum.

I'm personally happy that I forgot to sign up till now, and forgot that I had money to donate in paypal until today. I was hoping we could just move past it. This is about Bill, after all, and to some extent, it's about the KKF community as a whole.

Oivind has been a bit of a bull in a china shop this whole time, mailing off knives before we were sure we could find a legal way to raise donation awareness. Then bumping threads like crazy while mods were doing their thing. He just wants to help and be a good guy feverishly, but he can't be on everyone's side all the time at that level of intensity. I doubt Oivind really feels anything against Dave or Ryan as people.

There's no fly in the soup, I say. In some cultures, it's considered a delicacy.

I was upset cause those who arranged this had no interest or didn't want to be involved.

Cultural differences? Translation error? I wonder what he meant by that, which was lost in our low-fi interwebs.

Cultural differences? Translation error? I wonder what he meant by that, which was lost in our low-fi interwebs.

Trust me, people can mean anything by what they say. If you were Captain Asperger, you would know that for sure.

The point is, he didn't mean "I hate Dave and Ryan and think they screwed everything up because they secretly don't care if Bill lives or dies.", but that is how it is being taken. He just wants to make sure Bill gets what Oivind considers a huge amount of help. It would help if Oivind would appreciate Mr. Burke's attitude toward help and our sentiments...there is no situation in which this could end up disappointing Bill unless we end up divided over it.

I say we don't do that. And that we don't decide to keep from being a charitable group in the future.

Well said Eamon! Everyone here wants the best for Bill and his family. Let's focus on that first and the rest later! Anyway, here's to hoping this starts to get some additional positive exposure across the KnifeNut verse.

Actually, since Bill has a long history in hunters and such and not just Kitchen Knives, does anyone have the connections to post this info in those communities as well? I bet they'd be interested to help too!

I know some people have been offended by me, and Im not happy with it. Sorry to those who are upset and hurt.
I feel this fundraiser got more focus and Im happy for it, I hope also some people post the link on knife forums where there are hunter knives in focus.
That said: Im very happy that people get involved. Now I hope the mods on this forum can edit this thread and remove all the post that does not have donation or links to others forums marketing this fundraiser. That means deleting my posts.

Id say we give this fundraiser 2 weeks and end it october 16, it should be written in the first post :)
Thanks everyone for donating and helping Bill out :)

I appologize for being a fly in someones soup or a rhino in a store. I hope to see this thread edited soon. Keep up donations!

Thanks Oivind. And there you go again with your cultural liberty. It is a bull in a china shop, not a rhino in a store ;) Just kidding if you can't see the wink in the emoticon.

Btw, Mythbusters showed that a bunch of bulls in a china shop don't break anything really. They adroitly jog around the shelves of china with hardly any harm.

Is there a reason why the moderators doesn't cleaned this thread?
No point promoting a thread filled with arguments and about link don't working. I can't promote this thread as it is.
Even though I pointed out a lot of mistakes there are yet no interest from the moderators?

Problem is that if you donate a 100 000 USD car for a fundraiser and the people behind it only make 10 000, then there are no point in donating things.
Well, Im not impressed, but hope for this thread to be cleaned so we can start to promote this thing....

IMHO prohibiting future fund raisers is unnecessary. Over the years Iíve seen several go bad because of problems like this. Well intentioned people make mistakes they never anticipated. Thereís most always a problem when a donor wants to dictate how things are run.

Ovind had a legitimate concern when he thought his expensive donation wasnít going to raise the funds he thought it should have. It makes sense to set a minimum reserve of keeping donations open until a certain amount is reached. Or if itís not, everyone is told up front the big donation is off the table if thereís not enough response. Once thatís established there should be a firewall between the donor and the people running the fund raiser.

If donations are slow recommendations should be welcome, with the people running the show having final say.

Dave Martell
10-12-2011, 12:00 PM
It's unlikely that I'd be strictly against a future donation but I'll be much more cautious to set up ground rules and get those donating items to agree to the rules up front. This should keep us on the same page and avoid conflicts like what arose here.

In the end I hope that those that contributed, and Bill as well, can put the BS behind them and remember this for what it started out as and ultimately for the end results that it achieved.

I know how passionate you are about this subject and I applaud you for wanting to do the right thing by Bill. I have repeatedly defended you and I don't even know you, but your repeated personal attacks on those people who have jumped in and also helped a fellow member in need doesn't make sense. There are a lot of members who donated to Bill out of the kindness of their own hearts even though it is a burden on themselves and their families, but they did it anyway. In case you haven't noticed this is not good economic times in this country. Quite a few members who donated have been out of work for awhile and they gave anyway. It was never about the knife. The knife was your idea. Nobody is trying to cheat anybody. Name calling and the accusations that you are making are very hurtful and petty. This was supposed to be a feel good, help a brother in need situation and it has been tainted and that is sad. With that said, If I win the Shigefusa I will gladly send it back to you, so that you can sell it and donate the money to Bill.
When I first joined this forum, I would read the posts that you and the other guys would write, I would hear the laughter and joking in your words and I thought this is a group of people I want to be a part of. How many chimpanzee, female, lesbians from Norway could there be in the world? Something has changed in the last few months and I don't like it. I maybe new here and I may not understand the dynamics of what went on before, but I thought you guys were a family, albeit a dysfunctional one, but still family. You guys are stuck with each other and it is time for you guys to put on your big boy pants and grow up. I'm disappointed in you, I thought you were the fun one. What happened?
Why so angry? I truly wish and hope that you find peace and understanding in yourself and that you can except that there are many factors beyond our control and that we tried our best even though you don't feel that we did.
May there always be a road.

You are pointing out an important issue about the nature of these fundraisers. Any giveaway to a fundraiser is complementary and must be given with no conditions. If the amount raised doesn't even cover the contribution, that is very sad, but is something the contributor will have to take into account the moment he or she decides to contribute.

That said, I truly believe that ōivind has the very best intentions in his efforts to raise the highest possible amount of money to help out a person I know he regards very very highly. I know ōivind and I know he does his utmost to protect everyone he cares for. He is a person getting engaged with his whole heart in everything he chooses to get involved in, and I know he has been anxious about the amount of help we were able to raise for Mr. Burke.

I know he has been frustrated during this process. I know, because I have been talking to him on a regular basis. ōyvind's challenge is that he is a very direct communicator. He has high expectations for himself and expects nothing less from everybody around him. This, in addition to the fact that he will probably never be the best student in class on any Diplomatic school, has made him express his thoughts and opinions in a way that can be easily misinterpreted and/ or not entirely suited for print.

As a close friend of ōyvinds I know that any message he has posted here has carried his very very best intentions of helping Mr. Burke out to the best of his good will and ability. I will not or cannot apologize on ōyvind's behalf for any one feeling offended by his statements - he is a man for his own words and I trust he will apologize where an apology is due - but I do ask you to see things from his perspective before taking him to the gallows.

ōyvind will keep his word and donate the knife. As I know him he is a man of his word. I will at the discretion of the receiver refurbish the blade to an "as new" state free of cost before shipping.

Hopefully we have all learned a valuable lesson from this endeavour, leading to the next one running like oil on grease.
Peace and Love! May your edges never dull and may the JNAT be with you always if they do.

Thanks but you used the wrong donate button. The one at the beginning of the thread is the one for Bill Burke. The button at the top of each page is for the forum itself.

I'll give Ryan the funds to give to Bill.
