Anyone got some special orders they wanna share?
Or any plans on some cool knives this year?

I think its to long between the cool buys here, so just wonder if anybody got some interesting purchases in 2012 :)

I have 3 knives ordered from Marko. A 180mm Gyuto, a 150mm Petty (both in 52100) and a (wait for it) 270mm Suji in ladder damascus with a pimped handle (possibly a little mokume):bliss: That's why I said "I should be jealous, but..." on your tease thread:D

Ohh...

AEB-L on the ladder pattern?
Great choice of maker. Marko is def most bang for da bucks atm, in one year he will be able to double his prices :)

Actually, this one is in high contrast carbon, so it will really show off. It will primarily be a slicer (I'm pairing it with one of Pierre's forks), so bling is definitely desirable.

To what I'm waiting for this year:

Dave Gyuto - which is close to being finished
Del Nakiri
Pierre Pettysuki

All in O1

Pierre Fork

Really excited for them all.

What else I hope for this year:

Rehandle my carter
Get onto Marko's list
Get a DT
Get a boardsmith

Sounds like a fun year!

DT custom? I think DT backorder is more like 1,5 year or something :)
Nice knives though :)

I have one from Pierre Damascus Gyuto in like a bubble wrap pattern with redwood handle and copper trim, which. I'm so excited for! And a Gyuto from Marko which I'm equally excited for, haven't chosen the handle material yet. And a damascus petty from Del with a buckeye handle.

Then I'm looking at one or two others for myself, lot of ways this could go DT, Dave, another Pierre, another Marko, another Del, J knife rehandled by Dave?

Need a wa handle for my Nakiri, and have one on order from Stefan for a suji that hopefully comes this year.

Then maybe a his and hers set for my best friends wedding. Though I don't know if the gift seems too self serving?

Got one on the way from a KKF maker, another in the next few months, and just got on a list for what will likely be a 2013 delivery :cool2:

And I'm always on the lookout for other kitchen tools that Del might crank out!

Have a couple stones on the way from Jon at the moment.
A serving fork and gravy ladle in the works from Del.
And Dave will start making a custom board for me on Monday from Black Cherry :bliss:
I'm sure a couple more things will pop up during the year though. Also planning on buying a house sometime this year, so I need to be tighter with my money (not off to a great start)

Sadly, things have taken a turn for the worse this past week. Much to the chagrin of my wife, apparantly there will be two more packages heading my way later this week. And no, they will not be in the price range of the 210 Hiromoto AS 'second' that got me started barely two years ago :O

I just picked up a Carter Funy and some stones (JNS 1k and Rika 5k). I am considering a couple of options that I have to sit on for a little while to build up some funds again. Will C is doing some great damascus right now and I am torn between feather W or his turbulence (if he can remember how to do it again :rofl2:). I am also thinking about getting in on Marko's waiting list too. Randy and Randy Jr also are doing some great work - hmmmm choices choices. I was seriously considering having Dave do a knife block - but now I guess I am going to have to build one myself late spring / early summer and see how it turns out and no I am not taking orders yet - I am no where near the craftsman that Dave is - I am hoping maybe he can give me some pointers though now that he is out of the knife block biz.

My wife hits 40 this year and will get diamond earrings - sooo I still have some catch up considering all I got was the Zwilling Kramer Chef knife right?

I already got my HHH feather damascus petty/chef, something from Rader is making it's way across the country at the moment. Other than that...I could use another stone or two, maybe a leather roll from Steve, I'd like a mioroshi deba and/or yanagi. A couple things from Marko, an order from Carter should be done by the end of the year, and maybe a Burke too (Bill not Eamon).

I'm waiting for a Rodrigue Pro-line, and a fork from him as well. Other than that, I might be going monk and trying to figure out if I need to downsize at all.
I plan on continuing my woodworking so we'll see what comes of that. I have two straight razors to work on (one to refurb, the other to rescale), and that's about it....
Oh yeah, Adam Marr and I have been in talks recently, and his stuff looks very well done.

I'm most excited about making a few knives. So far, I've ground a couple of non-cooking, utility knives that I've been using around the house. I have four kitchen knives out for HT. I'll start grinding them as soon as they come back. I probably won't do the handles myself but I have a growing stash of wood chunks that I need to do something with. I might just sacrifice a few in the interest of science, lol. Aside from that, I'm expecting to acquire something from Jon, Hoss, Marko, Mike and Will, at some point or another. I'm not sure if Del is planning on sending me something as well. I guess I should ask him. I keep on thinking about acquiring some nice single bevel knives. Maybe this is the year...

The truth of the matter is I "baby" my knives compared to the pros. Salty asked me if my 2 yr old DTITK was new, lol. I've only broken a couple of tips over the last few years and those were about 1 mm each. Most of the damage to my knives happened when they encounted other people with the exception of when I took several of my favorite knives and tried to cut frozen fish with them to see how they would do compared to the Mizuno honyaki (That didn't go too well, btw.). This knife needs to be tested in a pro environment.

Johnny.B.Good

You have a Mizuno honyaki TK? If so, is it amazing?

tk59

You have a Mizuno honyaki TK? If so, is it amazing?I do not have a Miz honyaki. I took one of Salty's for a spin at some point. Is it amazing? In some respects, yes and in others, I would have to say, no. As you open the package, you notice it is a very nicely finished knife. Once you pick it up, the first thing you notice is it's a BEAST. The 240 was more like 230 and weighed more than most 270's, easy, even though the handle was very light (ho wood?). It's maybe half way to western deba, imo and probably a cost saving measure since I would imagine thicker knives fail less often during quench. The grind made up for a lot. While I wouldn't say it "fell" through food like some other thicker knives (Zakuri comes to mind.), it did make it through most food objects surprisingly well. It holds an edge quite well, too, considering it was white steel (not sure if it's white 1 or 2). My impressions may be on longer be relevant though. I know Salty was working with Koki to get them thinner. I'm not sure anything ever came of that. The definitely aren't my cup of tea but I could appreciate what they are.

I don't think you would want me grinding! I used to set my work bench on fire when I was hogging out a lot of blanks. The hot metal dust would kinda fuse together and sometimes the wooden bench would have a few flames :) 17 blades to profile with a 36 grit ceramic belt and lots of pressure!! I was OK with the bevels, but never got really clean with them, did a LOT of hand sanding!
