I think the worst part about those knives is that the gold ring isn't attached to the Handel! What are they trying to sell? Machetes?

Do you mean the "tsuba" or handguard? It isn't supposed to be attached to the handle on a Japanese sword. Of course, these are supposed to be kitchen knives for people that have watched too many Japanese samurai movies. I'm sure "Lone Wolf and Cub" have a set in their kitchen. :)

I wonder if the maker has been to Viet Nam recently? A lot of his kitchen knives look like they were copied off the standard Viet pattern. I've tried those and they aren't bad for Viet style cooking.

I don't think it would be fair to put that knife in that category, It is designed for kids, I am teaching my 3yo daughter how to push and pull cut , although it doesn't have the looks ,it will be useful with the blunt tip and and the grip point rather than my daughter trying to grab the knife from the heel. The latest "innovative" approach of how to combine pinch grip ergonomics with a fancy design from the German cutlery company Güde... looks to me like the love child of a flatiron and a ice skate. With designs like that, no wonder the only Güde a knife geek most likely will ever buy is the 32cm big bad Breadsaw. I'm curious how much weight it has, given how thick the knife is at the heel...sadly no online vendor so far tells you anything beyond that it is a heavy knife...

https://www.tp-kochmesser.de/documents/image/73/7398/7398-Guede--DIE--MESSER--Delta--Kochmesser--21cm.jpg

And guess what the price for that abomination of a 26cm knife is? Okay, to be fair the knife AND a kitchen towel.

freaking 295 € ... I got my 270mm konosuke w#2 for less than that... Jesus!

Indeed, there was a thread on this female blacksmith not too long ago. Evidently she's got a waiting list. I think we can all agree that she's not trying to achieve that same quality in her knives that we look for.

I'm not going to poo poo her either, each to their own. Lets just say I'm not into Ken Onion profiles either. This woman could learn a lot from Luke and David from Bloodroot. Those guys know how to make a good cutters in original (non Japanese) shapes.

One thing is certain, aesthetically she won't be confused with anyone other maker.

One thing is certain, aesthetically she won't be confused with anyone other maker.

From a marketing standpoint, that is often half the battle. As you said, she's selling knives and making money. I can almost guaranty that everyone who slapped down $800 on one of her knives is very happy with it and shows it off to their friends. I say 'you go girl'!, it ain't hurting me none:2cents:. (and yes, I think they're ridiculous and thoroughly belong in this thread too, but she ain't the only one out there making money on ugly knives).:D

Not sure if these have been posted before, but I saw them at Costco just recently. This is the third iteration of these knives I've seen. The first had a mono-color coated blade to match the handle, and the second had sort of iridescent oil-on-water colored blades. I guess these are for people who need a visual clue about what to use their knife for.

Dang, I still have the pictures of the prototypes of these knives on my computer somewhere, from a couple of years ago. So they have actually put them into production. I'd love to have a look at them, but i seriously doubt they are anywhere thin enough to facilitate proper cutting. I would also expect the wood to shrink or become loose around the rivets pretty quickly and leave the steel edges rattling around on the wooden corpus.

Of course I now had to waste 10 minutes and dig out those pics. The prototypes looked a good deal fancier:

The Nesmuk looks pretty cool. Not sure what 80K Euro is in real money but if it's less than 10 bucks I might buy one as a gift

At today's exchange rate, $89,768.00.

Not this week, sorry. I'm still looking for a knife worthy of the "sage" of the forum - and for 10 bucks.

I wish my Dalman, Ashis, Hinouras, Solinger 100year old Knifes and everything i got have Cats on them!!
Cat prints are known for sharper cutting!! ..really.. for sure.. maybe ;)))

ah and @Iggy
sorry that comment on Danieru was related to discussions in a german knife forum were some dude was totally angry/pissed of/mehmehmeh because we laughed our arses of this russian oligarch blingbling sheit.. "!!!!! blablablablabla blaa well this knife cuts like ****, is totally overprized, the marketing team is allways on coke and lying like hell and it cuts suboptimal, but please discuss the knife!"... well ehh ok ;)) 390 Europesos for the cheapest that has to be immediately send to a bladedoctor to make it acutally good and also bevel and round the totally unrounded and sharp edges (finish is on Zakuri 30 bucks budget knife level)

Its so hyped that you can only give yourself the biggest facepalm in the universe believing that marketing nonsense.

well get yourself a nesmuk and be the master of the universe!! (thats what the buyers believe but the first 1mm of the edge is like an axe with a nonsese micro hollow grind and blablabla)
All the chicks will love you as its actually only for impressing women ;)

but still that catknife looks "WOW" to mee ;)) (well i love cats ..ehm didnt mentioned earlier)

Not that these wouldn't look identically beautiful if seen in real life, as they certainly would... When I see this stuff, I can't but worry that Germany (though true with many other places, too) has become a bit too prosperous now. Oh dear.

Hah, funny side note : we had a discussion about those knives on the German knife board, following a review of one of the entry level knives (which still cost >400$). That brand gets quite some surreptitious advertising on various television channels, so we were curious how much of the hype is real, or if they just have some clever marketing staff.

Given the design choices and not even taking into account the fact that one could be a genuine kramer for the price of the knives you shown, we dubbed them Russian oligarchy knives...

Well, they'll need something to put in the kitchens of their pricey, empty flats in London or Mediterranean villas.

I met a knifemaker at the show in NYC (well, technically it was in Jersey City LOL) who made 50-70k knives for those dudes, including one that was gifted to Putin by one of his oligarch friends. Great craftsmanship, but man were those knives cheesy...

Any chance of links to any videos of this?

I don't speak a word of German, but I'm curious all the same of how they're pushing these.

The Tojiro Origami and Origami Black

http://www.tojiro-japan.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/F-17712.jpg

http://www.tojiro-japan.com/products/862/

"Kitchen knives reach very high temperatures as they are welded together, and their metallographic structures and properties are changed, leading to corrosion or decreasing their usefulness. To solve this problem, we focused on employing Japanese origami skills. Through our enthusiastic work with highly-experienced engineers and workers in the Tsubame-Sanjyo area, we were finally able to successfully fold and bend sheets of hard stainless steel into creations as beautiful as origami. This method brings out the pure beauty of the knives by using a single sheet of material and doing away with the need to weld. This is the fusion of Tsubame-Sanjyo’s skills and Japanese tradition."

So do they usually weld the handles on?

LifeByA1000Cuts

I guess they have taken inspiration from this:

http://www.amazon.de/TokioKitchenWare-4-teiliges-Messerset-Stahlgriff-handgeschmiedet/dp/B00RYFL0AI/

Something about the handle shapes on the original makes one want to stick a shovel pole in them.
