Fish (Greg Crowton) was one of the first kick off members over @ ITK/KF. He became the first moderator there. He is most well known for all the innovative rehandle work he did in only a couple of years time. Seems like he re-handled just about everything that was known to us back then.

Unfortunately Fish has passed away but his work still remains. If you've got a re-handled Fish knife or know of pictures of Fish's work please post it here. Let's build a gallery for him. :smile1:

This might have been #2.

I remember really digging the coffin styled handle.

Only one Fishy knife, a gigantic 240mm Masahiro carbon santuko. Got it from a KF member some years ago. I really cherish it and ain't never gonna sell it.

For some stupid resason, imageshack won't let me upload. :mad3:

I'm looking forward to this gallery! I believe he left before my time, so you guys will be more than reminiscing--I'm seeing this stuff for the first time! Like showing the real Star Wars to kids who've only seen the new ones.

Here are the two I have left: One Hiro AS 240 with koa, red palm and a copper spacer, and one Takeda 210 with koa, red palm spacer and mango ferrule.

Old pics, I'll take new ones soon (after I cleaned the rust from the Takeda :scared2: - well, not bad, actually).

Here's the knives gifted to me by the KF forum members. Fish did rehandles on the Suien cleaver & Watanabe gytuo.

Man, this thread makes me a little sad. He was before my time, but I spent about 4 hours looking through his gallery thread on KF once a while back, and it wasn't till I did some searching that I realized he had passed. He had his own flare for handles that I've never really seen anywhere else, and his work was really top notch.

Wow!!!
Thanks for putting all of that right here for us to see!
His work was absolutely incredible!
I found myself going, "That's my favourite...no, this one is my favourite. Wait, this one is amazing"!
The handle that made me a Misono fan is in here too!
I feel like I was looking through an album of everybody's pride and joy...pretty awesome stuff!

Fish and Andy were the two pioneers.

I know Fish was an inspiration to all who have rehandled their knives.

Stefan, Marko, Dave have continued the tradition well, and we are the beneficiaries.

Mario's stuff is amazing too.

Fish facts>

Raised in Detroit, right across the street from HockeyTown USA. Was friendly with the Howe boys who used to hang out while their Dad was on the ice.

Multiple tours in Vietnam. Although I know he fought I don't know if he was a Soldier, Marine, or Seal.

Settled in HI after the war. Went to barbering school.

Ran his own construction business, I believed he specialized with interior work (koa).

Made koa boxes/chests, desk items, etc for sale.

Harley rider

Golf nut

Cooking Enthusiast

Good friends with a major Hollywood actor, I forget his name though.

Married with (I believe) 3 children. 2 girls and 1 boy. The son (nicknamed "Poi") was killed by a car at a young age (13?). The "Poi" in "Fish n Poi" is from his son's nickname, when they were seen together people would say, "Here comes Fish n Poi".

Knifenut turned handlemakingnut. I believed he did the bulk of his knife work in 2006/2007.

Well I've owned 8 Fish handled knives and still have 6. 4 are cleavers the rest knives. Now one cleaver I sold as I bought it off the original owner and the other is the last handle made by Fish that David Smith (Boardsmith) now has which is a Watanabe Nakiri with a saya shown here near the end.

Well perhaps next to Andy I was. I'm about to unload some of my knives though, but still deciding on what I want to keep. I will probably keep the fish handled knives though as well as the one done by you and Stephan on the Shinichi Watanabe Mukimono. Dawn has fallen in love with that thing. :smile1:

Yep, my gyuto sayas were influenced by Fish saya in koa he made for Carter gyuto. I have never seen that saya up close (only in pictures), so I don't know how it is constructed, but shape-wise it definitely influenced my work.

I believe one of his daughters was in the kitchen professionally...remembering a story of a line cook who borrowed and tortured one of her knives - one that Fish had set up for her. I think that cook was spared only by the fact Fish was on a different island.

For those of you that missed the Fish experience, he used to put his rehandle jobs up for sale on the "For Sale" part of the forum - I believe the all time record was a sale in 13 seconds. I never could score one of his pieces of art.

He also did personal jobs such as my cleavers but he supplied the knives even for those jobs. Now once he got to know you it became a little different in that you could send him a knife to be done. I did managed to buy 4 knives from him on the For Sale sight though, but missed the one I really wanted. The other cleaver I bought was from the original owner with the rest order knife and handle through him.

He rehandle golf clubs and with his woodworking back ground the knife handles were a natural progression .
the scope and trying different things some of the first to kitchen knife handles is quite impressive.

Is that textured ferrule, on the tip side?

Marko, I looked at it, and picked at it with a dental probe. It appears to be some excess glue or epoxy. It does look a bit like texture, though.

I believe that I saw a picture of him using a homemade punch to make that texture. I don't remember exactly where, tho.

You sure you're not thinking of David B? I remember thinking it was pretty crazy that he made a punch just to texture bolsters.

Oh wow seeing the older Hiromoto and Takeda's was painfull. I remember long nights in chat with Fish and the rest of the old school guys here and there. I believe Fish sent me my first Japanese knife as he was the only one in the group that had my address at that time. I had bought a petty off him just a few days before it arrived, not knowing that Koki got stuff to you in 3 days lol. Fish and I where working on getting my heromoto rehandled just before his health tanked. We never got together again after that...

His work was really out there for it's time :)

One thing I love about some of Fish's western handles is that they're tapered/narrowed at the end of the handle. This makes perfect sense to me because if you look at your hand when gripping something, the area where your ring finger and pinky are is narrower than where your thumb, index finger and middle finger are. It would seem that these handles are super comfortable and relaxing to hold.

Here is one that some how I didn't post. This was one I had Fish actually buy the knife and handle it before I actually got to see it. It is a 150mm Hattori Honiseki.

I just saw this thread again and found the nakiri I have which Fish rehandled. The handle is immaculate and the workmanship is superb. Fish did a marvelous job. I use the knife rarely and make sure it is put up dry and clean. With the work Fish put into the handle, I don't want sloppy care on my part to spoil it.

You don't even have to be a "knife nut" to have emotions stirred in you when you look at these photos. If you don't feel something move inside of you looking at these then you need to go sit in a quiet room and search yourself for what is missing. There are some real unique handles here and some of the best cleaver rehandles I have seen to date.

Dave put it in your mind as I will place it in mind that in the future I will ask of you to do a "Fish" inspired rehandle of a cleaver for a good friend of mine. Thought placed and set in motion.

Kind Regards

Bryan

This is SO worthy of bumping. A lot of guys (like me) who are newer around here don't know who Fish was. I only became curious about him because of his name on KF's itk. He lived in the same town in Maui that a couple of my friends live in, but I figured something was up because he hadn't posted in several years.
All these pieces are truly beautiful works of art. If you own a Fish, you are a lucky guy!

Well, I traded a beautiful 330 Watanabe suji for a 270 HD gyuto with a snakewood handle with Fish many years ago. Later I sold the Fish gyuto, and now I really, really wish I still had that Watanabe suji. But I am only saying that because I have 2 more knives rehandled by Fish. :)

I felt that same way about a year ago, and I put up a WTB thread. End story is that a very cool KKF member sold me a great knife with a Fish handle.

Thanks, K! However, I think one might have found me!

By the way, your Fish cleaver is a beaut! As boring as it sounds, I'd love a Carter with a Fish handle someday, or that UX10 that Joe C had (maybe still has). That is the exact knife that turned me onto Japanese knives, and specifically Misonos. Ah well!

For fun, and to keep this thread alive, we should say if a Fish handle is responsible for our love of beautiful knives, or even just tell everyone which is our favourite. For me, see above, though the one that I'm "looking at" keeps me coming back for more. Turns out Fish could alter blades beautifully as well.

I have all of the Fish handled knives I bought except two. One I bought to help the original owner out, hoping he would get out of the bind he was in but not to be. I did sell it though to someone that really lusted over it and still loves it. The other was the last knife Fish ever re-handled an Wannabe nakiri and even made me a sheath. I traded it to Dave Smith (board smith) for a cleaver block. Oh and the MX10 is still serving my wife well in the kitchen. At any rate I have a bunch still, 3 cleavers, 3 knives. I have a few other custom handled knives but only one is close to Fish's work.

Bump for pure awesomeness and to let memories live on.

Newer here and I can't say I knew who Fish was before randomly tripping into this thread about 30 minutes ago by way of the Buy/Sell/Trade board but I'm truly blown away by his work, you can just feel his love and passion for his work through the pics alone, can't imagine they even do it justice, must be amazing in person.

Someone else earlier ITT said something along the lines of you think you found your favorite one and wind up scrolling down a little and you're like, "Nope that's my favorite!", then you go to the next page, rinse and repeat.

If not too intrusive, how did he pass and how old was he?

R.I.P. Fish.

Don't know his exact age but he was a retired woodworker. At some point he had just disappeared from the forums, turned out he had a brain tumor and spent his last days in a hospice. Still admire his creativity.

What blows me away is how he managed to do so much work that's all different yet somehow similar and made it happen in such a short period of time and at a time when no one else was even thinking about rehandling kitchen knives.

Most people don't know that Fish was approached by Bark River & AG Russell to design handles/knives for them. The deal never came to fruition but can you imagine what Fish would have come up with?

I'd love an actual picture book of his work, with a little blurb on the knife, handle materials, and approximate date he made it. Is this at all doable, through shutterfly, or anything? Maybe we could do it, and donate the money to the hospice he was in, or to the Brain Tumor Foundation. If this is inappropriate, please delete my post.

He was the man, and his work has served as a constant source of inspiration for me, and I know, countless others.

That sound like a great idea if it appropriate of course. I was lucky enough to own a cleaver by the man for a very short time before we had a break-in. Thank you guys for sharing the information. I was not aware he did it in such a short time. What a visionary and a loss for us knife lovers. Rest well sir.

I was fortunate enough to be around the forum, when he was one of the moderators. While his work rightly gets a lot of attention. He was a great moderator. Willing to freely share his vast knowledge on Japanese knives. Plus he was incredibly generous. A member somehow broke a knife, out of frustration. Fish asked the member to send him the pieces. A few months later, the member got a box in the mail, that had a honesuki in it. Fish had reground and rehandled the knife, all at no charge to the member. He always seemed to be doing things for the people on the forum. He was and still is quite the inspiration.
