Made good progress this weekend on the Dubh's I was planning damasus bolsters, But the materials had other ideas. So I switched to bronze bolsters. Then I needed to change handle material because the buckeye and the Bronze just didnt get along. :D

So I went with Musk Ox horn. Here are a few photots of the progress so far!

Thanks Mark, I think?!?!?

Made some progress on these! :happymug:

Heres the specs. These are approx 8" OAL High Carbon damascus blades, Basket weave pattern. Bronze bolsters and musk ox horn handles.

Im honored to be making these..The man who commissioned the knives is planning on giving one to his Father, One to his brother. One to his son and one for himself. These will also come with presentation boxes and sheaths. I imagine they will be passed down from generation to generation in there family. Which makes them and this project even more special in my opinion.

I never would have guessed that a combi of dammy bolster, ivory and tooth ivory would go together without looking absolutely garish... yet the final outcome is really sick. Congrats on a great artistic vision.

How was it working with Elmax?

Im lovin it. After doing a few destruction tests on a few test blades with different grinds and thicknesses. Im VERY IMPRESSED!!

As far as how it grinds and works on te sander. I find it to cut easy and grind easy on the belts and tools.. That is until after heat treat.. Then its a BEAR to refine and make changes. Tough stuff!!!

Different shops for each, whoever I feel gives the best product.

Actually, I work with artists that hand craft these for me.. That will take my designs, and make them a reality. :)

The box maker is Tom Blevins, And for my leather. I use Carl Thomas. another fine craftsman and leather smith.

Is that writing on the lids?

HHH Knives
06-23-2012, 02:16 PM
Yes, Each has a written name in Gaelic. The other symbols burnt into the box and sheath are Christian symbols, one for the trinity and the other is the earliest known Christian cross found in Celtic ruins etc.

Amazing! Those look like props for an upcoming hollywood summer blockbuster!! Except that they would never be used in the fight scenes. Nobody wants knives that would actually kill.

Im not sure which thing I ill tackle first or if Ill do 4 or 5 of them all at the same time. :) Which believe it or not seems to work best for me somehow. So if one isnt seeming to "Talk" to me I have a back up waiting to "Talk" to me!! Well now im just being silly.

Here is the next batch, 2 smaller blades are meteorite damascus and the 2 larger blades are WWW.com pattern damascus. The 2 HUGE knives are a set for a client in Alaska who will use them to process some of the large animals that they hunt and live off of. Moose and bear and Rams etc.

Man my bench is TOTALLY TRASHED! Its amazing I can find anything!! Ill clean it after the weekend

So all these knives and still no kitchen knives.. Whats up with that?!?!? lol Dont worry, after this batch I have like 8 kitchen knives in a row. So hang with me and soon Ill have some KKF worthy blades to share!

P.S. Im also gona do a short run of dog tags and cross pendents. So if anyone wants one feel free to message me and get on the list.

Randy the top pics of the mammoth ivory looks like it is starting to crack. Is that on purpose or just the light? Beautiful as always.

HHH Knives
07-03-2012, 08:00 PM
The ivory is 10 to 12000 years old. The color, crazing and pits and texture that is visible is natural and considered very desirable in a piece of bark ivory. The handles are whats called the Bark or the out side layer of a tusk. Small fissures and pits and stuff is natural, and often the cool color and texture and fissures only runs into the tusk a small amount (like 1/8" or less) and then it becomes that creamy white ivory color you would expect to see.. Normally when I work with mammoth ivory bark, I take extra care not to remove all the color and natural distress and texture. :) There so many variables with natural materials like this. and in this case, The crack as you may call it is part of the ivory's natural beauty!

Thanks for asking and checking out the post!

Breaking down and cleaning a bear would not be light work, yikes!

hehehe, I tell ya, the 2 smaller blades are 9 1/2" long with approx 4" of blade. So you can see these Bear and moose cutting knives are quite a bit LARGER for the task. Like kitchen knives everyone likes r needs different knives in the field. Some like slender blades, spear points if you will. Others like large upsweapt blades. and some straight blade with a good belly., Now,, a "perfect hunting knife" for me at least is a 3 to 3 1/2" drop point blade with full flat grinds. a deep belly. well like the Elmax Skinner I just posted. For what I cut, mainly white tail deer and and the occasional Rabbit.. Its all you would ever need, and not so large that it would be cumbersome. Whatever works best for the job at hand!

Thanks for the comment and checking out the thread and Happy 4th to you all!

Is that an inlay spacer between the bolster and the handle? Is it at an angle or is it a visual effect? and what material did you use? I don't believe I've seen that before...

Good morning guys! July was a wild month. filled with hunting knives and fighters and even a folder! But NO kitchen knives. This one is heading to Wyoming and will be put to work. My client has 11 tags from everything from deer to rams and elk and even a bear! He plans on this being his new field knife and using it on every hunt!

This is a classic hunter made from Galaxy pattern damascus with WWW guard and some of the finest green mammoth tusk I have ever had the pleasure of using!

OAL approx 9" with a 4" blade.

I have 2 more hunting knives to complete on my bench. Then the next 10 or so knives are KITCHEN KNIVES, with a few folders thrown in for fun! lol :)

Thanks to all my clients for your patience Im slamming and jamming.. :) It wont be long now. As the damascus for most of the knives is already forged and waiting on me.

OK so heres some images of that Hunter.

God Bless

Its a KNIFE LIFE!

extraordinary Randy! At least I can dream.

These are going to one of our KKF members.

THE PLAN.

3 Stainless steel damascus 240mm gyutos with K tip and unique handles.

At this point, Im thinking Stag on all three for the main part of the handle with unique bolsters on each. One in Damascus, One in Rought Iron, and one in wood. :) But tis is open to change.

If you like stag, wait till you see the stuff I secured for these knives. Im talking 5 star.. Popcorn, top notch stuff worthy to be on any show stoper bowie knife stuff!!

Thoughts, critiques, interested?

The hekler
02-07-2013, 05:05 PM
They all look like great knives to me, but for a paring knife where 95% of the work is done in hand; the name of the game to me is getting the blade as close to the handle as possible, while the craftsmanship is top notch these wouldn't work for what I'd be looking for in a paring knife. Hopefully others feel very differently cause they do look cool though and id love to see some reviews, maybe I'm way off base?

HHH Knives
02-07-2013, 05:17 PM
Thanks, for the honest critique. Ill take a few in hand photos of these for you guys.

From my perspective, The handle virtually disappears into your hand and your thumb and index fingers are out in front allowing for good control and ease of use. But I may be WAY off base here?

I would like to send one to a couple people to test out and get a review or two. not sure how to do hat. But will think about it more and make it happen.

Paco.McGraw

Not sure about a paring knife, but I like the general profile of it as a pocket knife.

Im a wharncliffe/sheep foot type a guy and the one on the left and the two on the right look good to me. That buckeye especially.

The carter I use everyday has been with me quite a while. Maybe its time I got something else...

I was just working out my design for a custom edc and these actually dont look that different from my sketches. After using a small knife with a forward finger choil, i dont think that i could ever go back.
These look like you really put some thought into them and knocked the design out of the park.

This looks like the combo of design and steel that might finally make me hang up my shun classic paring knife (aka the best knife that shun makes).

I would really, really like to get one of these into my big hands. Is the one far left spoken for yet?

Wow!
I just looked through this whole thread, and now my keyboard is all wet from me drooling. Your knives are some of the most beautiful works of art I've ever seen... and they're usable! Don't much understand much use in "shelf queens."
I most own some type of neck knife/EDC knife from you. The kind, when you show it to people they forget it's a knife, but then show it off by cutting something... Wood/paper/SHAVE! <silly grin> hehe I'll have to send you a PM, and we'll see what happens...

Also... even more important, for the knives I've seen a price for, they are incredible reasonably priced! I've seen "simliar" hunting knives list for $3,000 or more... I think the most recent knife I saw, you had it on your FB page, I think was in the $600 range... or a bit more... but under a grand... Amazing... simply amazing! Keep up the good work...

take care,

The pummel on this one I made by hand. I dont have a Lathe so I used my belt sanders and I think it "turned" out great! Hand engraved by my friend Doug Sutherland

More photos when it done!

Thanks for looking, God Bless

HHH Knives
03-06-2013, 10:13 PM
Mark, Yep The multi bar one is the Seax. Im looking at a block of walnut burl for the handles. and doing a carved handle. Yet I still may go with horn or ivory for the handle? decisions, decisions ;)

Yep thats it! :) HEHE

Really this amazing sword billet is heading to another smith who specializes in swords. he will be finishing it. Im still super proud of Jr. forging this is a milestone and a huge accomplishment. As Son will tell you and some others over the years. That have requested knives with feather pattern. Up until recently I would of said it couldn't be done.. There he goes proving me wrong. Or is it right? Either way. Its awesome! :)
