I would like to attach a Word file to a post rather than incorporate all the text from the file. I can't get it into Photobucket, and don't know how else to reference a file. Is it possible?

Thanks

Good question....one that I don't have an answer to.

Keith, you can upload a word.doc using the advanced reply (vs quick reply).

The only issue that I see here is that the people wanting to view it have to first download it to their PC first.

When I click on "manage attachments", nothing happens. How do I get the file into the post?

Here's what I did....

Go Advanced> Manage Attachments> Add Files> Select Files> Upload Files

Dave, there are some fairly stringent limits on file sizes. I tried a test with a small one page text only PDF file and got this:

"Untitled.pdf: Your file of 27.7 KB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 19.5 KB for this filetype."

Hmmmm.....I tested it and it worked fine for me. I also looked into the permissions and you have the same as I do so you should be able to upload a word.doc no problem. :dontknow:

What's a decent file size for a PDF?

50 k would be a good start. That would be about 3 pages or so, without images.

I opened both .doc & .pdf to 2Mb

Keith, I can see the doc fine but it seems that you hosted it offsite and just linked to it versus uploading it like you were originally looking to do. Did you give up on the direct upload?

Yes. When I click "manage attachments" on the advanced screen, nothing happens. In addition, I think the file is too big to upload. The box.com website works like Photobucket, accepts text files, and is free, so it is a reasonable solution.

Thanks,

Keith

Dave,

I tested a PDF, and it uploaded fine, but it didn't display in the browser as I'd hoped, only downloaded. Oh, well, thanks for increasing the limit, anyway.

From what I can find it appears that doc & pdf files have to be downloaded before viewed so they won't appear in the browser. This is a vBulletin thing. :(
