View Full Version : What a week!
09-13-2012, 11:30 AM
This has been a rough week. I have to vent a little. You have been warned. you can turn back now.. or continue reading!
I am gona be out of commission for at least a couple weeks!
First part of the this week. I was gluing up some spacer materials, Using super thin CA glue. I was making one spacer with 7 different pieces of ultra thin materials. Anyways, My finger got STUCK to one side of the materials, As they often do. As I pulled my finger off It opened up the spacers. then when the glue or the skin on my finger gave way, The spacer materials slammed shut, Shooting a small amount of CRAZY GLUE into my eye! So after a trip to ER, and the pharmacy. My eye is healing well. Thank God.
I always wear safety glasses, I had mine on when this happened. But they were resting on the top of my head an not protecting my eye! New rule is to ALWAYS, no matter what we are doing in the shop, To have safety glasses on. I will be enforcing it with Jr. and he is gona keep me in check as well!
Then, yesterday about 9:00 PM I was standing and leaned forward to grab something off the bench. when I felt and heard the worst sound ever, It was a pop/ripping sound followed by intense pain in my calf!! I almost fell right on my face.
I have never felt or heard anything quite like this. I was scared as I sat down to take inventory of what just happened to my calf. And if I could move everything etc. Everything seems to move OK but it HURT something terrible if I walked on it. or moved it just right
After another trip to ER this morning, Yep. Its torn They call it a gastrocnemius tear. Which equates to in English. its torn really good! lol There is not much that the doctor can do. Wrap it and alternate hot and cold, stretch it out often and wait for it to heal.
It looks like Im gona be out of the shop for a week or two. (Yet in the big picture, Im happy its no surgery required to repair only time to heal and some stretching etc.)
Anyone with a custom knife order on my books, I apologize that there will be a even longer wait time as I have to let this heal or I risk long term damage. Anyone with a damascus order. Jr is gona be working on them and they should be on schedule.
Thanks for letting me vent a little and ask for some prayers for a speedy and full recovery.

Randy, get well soon. My thoughts are with you.
09-13-2012, 12:11 PM
Prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
09-13-2012, 12:20 PM
Randy, hope you feel better soon. Just remember to take the full time to recover. We want you at full strength, feeling as chipper as ever.
09-13-2012, 12:38 PM
Wow Randy, that really sucks. However I do know what you are going through.
About 2 months ago I was playing ultimate frisbee and I suffered a tibia plateau facture and a partially torn acl as well as some other torn ligaments in the knee. I may have to get sugery on my knee but I'm fully mobile now anyhow. Now a couple of days ago I was drying some dishes and I dropped a glass, I tried to stop it with my bare foot but missed and stepped right on the broken glass. I had too get 11 stitches in my toes on the same leg that I previously injured.
I feel your pain Randy and wish you the best of luck in your recovery!

walk it off, Pussy! lol get well brother!
09-13-2012, 12:57 PM
Karl, Im sorry to hear about your recent injury. Ill be praying for ya for a full recovery.
I feel almost bad for complaining about this, Because I know its really nothing compared to some of the stuff life can throw at us.
(I am wearing safety glasses as I type this. You cant be to careful! lol :D )
My main concern is letting my clients/friends and custom orders know what is happening. I think in a time where your down or broken, most folks are very understanding. I have worked hard to build a good reputation and provide my clients with what I believe to be very good customer service and communications. Problem is, this will ultimately effect many if not all my orders that are on the bools already. I hate to say that as well.
Thanks guys for the thoughts and prayers.
Im gona lay down and elevate the leg and try and follow the docs orders.

Ow ow ow, anything to do with eyes puts my teeth on edge, that sounds like a very unfortunate one, sympathies to you, get well soon buddy.:(
09-13-2012, 03:27 PM
Thank you all.
I was scared hearing the tendon POP, or rip. etc. Very unsettling indeed! But now that the doc said nothing came unattached. And that time will heal it. Im a lot better! :)
Its gona be hard for me to set or rest for very long, I have a hard time sitting still and or laying around. It just dont do nothing for me. except make me long to be in the shop or anywhere other then the couch!
(And YES I am still wearing my safety glasses! ) Im not taking any chances! lol

Best wishes for a speedy recovery! I think there must be some sort of cosmic thing going on, my right knee is in an ace bandage from DottieMae the whirly girl tripping me yesterday and slamming me onto the sidewalk, and I have either subluxated ribs at the sternum or broken ribs on my left side. I need to wear a helmet when around her now.
09-14-2012, 03:53 AM
Wow Randy, all that bad luck, you are bound to have some good luck in the upcoming weeks. Best wishes on a speedy recovery!
09-14-2012, 04:22 AM
Sorry to hear about all that Randy: being injured and out of action is a really frustrating thing, but as you said, you're fortunate that nothing was worse. Here's wishing you s speedy recovery and that you've gotten all of your mishaps for the next few years out of the way all at once.

09-16-2012, 04:44 PM
Get well soon!
09-17-2012, 11:21 AM
Just saw this thread, and I feel your pain! I tore my hamstring, at soccer, about 3 months ago. It's all healed up, but I just noticed it's still discoloured from the huge bruising (that's normal for bad tears, so don't be nervous about yours, Randy!)
Get well soon :)
09-17-2012, 08:35 PM
Its been about 5 days, and I have been a bit stir crazy.
Thanks for the comments and prayer and good vibes!!
The duct tape comment was funny. I think you may be right buy I would DREAD tearing it off! :censored:
Glad you healed up fast Lefty!
It shouldn't be long and I will be back to the GRIND!!! :EDance2:
09-18-2012, 10:19 AM
Randy, just dont use gafting tape. A female friend used to tape herself up to go to renaissance fairs with duct tape. One day she ran out and tried gafting tape, lets just say it ended with a hospital run to get it off. But she looked good all day!
09-18-2012, 08:34 PM
Today I went out in the shop and did some file work and ground out a folder blade. and things went well. Stepin slow still, but feeling way better thank God.
My eye is 100% better and my leg seems to be healing fast and well. Thanks again guys for the good vibes and prayers. I hope to be running strong by this time next week! :)
09-18-2012, 09:37 PM
I hope safety glasses were involved with this whole process.
09-19-2012, 03:29 PM
Dang Randy that sounds painful and the eye glue sounds crazy scary. Man I hate that thin CA glue but it works so great for some things, just so dangerous. Well it sounds like you're on the mend so that's good to hear, take it easy though.
I don't want to jinx you by talking about the "bad things come in 3's," but I think I just did!
Get well, man, get well. God Bless.

Glad it didn't slow you up too much. ;) Get well soon, and take a break now and then!
09-25-2012, 07:15 PM
