The Misono Company was established in 1935, by Mr. Shimizuís uncle, and has kept the company exclusively a small family owned business for decades. The company began as a kitchen tool blade maker for vegetable peelers. After 1945, Misono began importing painting palate knives overseas. Misono did not begin producing knives until the late 1960ís.

Today Misono is Japanís oldest Western style knife maker, with only 50 workers to produce 150,000 knives a year. While many larger companies send knives to other manufacturers with specialists to create different parts of a knife, Misono produce 100% of their knives in house with extreme attention to detail.

Although, Western style knives are often manufactured with machinery, Misonoís production process is very similar to Traditional Japanese style knives, due to how it is mostly hand done. Misonoís policy is to make a long lasting edge retention made out of hard steel for professional to utilize. To ensure this policy, knives do not leave the company without passing various inspections.

On September 29th to October 1st, Korin had the honor of having Mr. Toru Shimizu, the Misono Company president visit. During these few days Mr. Shimizu sharpened knives for hundreds of Misono fans, held Q&A sessions each day of the event, and picked out raffle winners.

While I was freaking out about something stupid, I had a wonderfully pleasant surprise and finally got to meet a KKF member!! Saltydog popped into the event and said hi. Thank you, Saltydog! It was so nice meeting you. :)

Guests enjoyed little dessert cups, shopped, watched Mr. Shimizu sharpen knives, and socialized with the Korin family. The lucky winners of the raffles were Ms. Montserrat from Mexico (Togiharu Pro 240mm chef), Mr. Jeremy Motz (Togiharu PRO Slicer), and Mr. Minh from Montreal (Togiharu PRO 210mm Chef). We ended the festivities with grand cake finale, decorated with beautifully made fondant sculptures of a knife, cutting board and meat.

Little raspberry/mango/pistachio/chocolate mousse cups handed out to guests during the event. I snuck one to the office and ate it. It was pretty good. :P

Mr. Shimizu working hard, sharpening everyone's Misono knives. He was very pleased without the event went.

Admittedly, I thought my head was going to explode. Planning the event is hard, but inviting people to attending and praying they actually do is rough. The second day was a lot less stressful.

Me reading the Q&A. Have I ever mentioned my fear of public speaking? lol

Taking the fondant sculptures off the cake, because everyone was touching it.

Mr. Shimizu's hand close up. He was actually Mr. Mizuyama (Mr. Sugai's grand master)'s apprentice for 30 years and he was taught how to sharpen by him before taking over the Misono company.
