View Full Version : New Contest - Drawing 12/7

I am running in circles at the moment so I am unable to take the time to come up with a creative contest.

But.........
More wood arrived today from getting stabilized at K&G. There were several blocks of this stuff.

For the contest you get to make 1 guess what kind of wood this is. Doesn't matter if you are right but we will all think you are smart if you guess correctly.
Since nobody is going to be able to guess what it is, your post number will be your entry into the drawing.

You can enter a second time if you post a photo of the ugliest knife you own.

On 12/7 I will use the random number generator to see who wins the contest.
Winner gets this block.

http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac219/burlsource/apr12/001-58.jpg

A quick hint.
I bought this wood several years ago from a veneer guy.
It took 5+ years to dry and there was about 90% waste.
I would trim away the cracked up portions and get one box of kindling and one knife handle block.

I have decided to make a slight modification to the contest.

The block shown at the beginning of the thread will go to the 1st person who identifies it correctly.
I will post what it is when we do the drawing on the 7th.

2nd prize will go to whoever has a post number that matches the random number selected.

So there will be 2 prizes.
One for being smart.
One for being lucky.

Why yes it is! It originally had a plastic wrapper on it, which was carefully removed by hand to expose the gleaming black plastic beneath.

Most people have never seen curly eucalyptus.
I want to know how Vertigo and Quantumcloud figured it out.
I would have guessed curly mango or ???? if I hadn't known.

I became very familiar with eucalyptus when I talked my boss into spending a few thousand on some fresh cut logs.
Looked like nice wood but it moves like crazy when drying.
Took about 5 years and about 90% waste.

I am glad you like it.
On a side note; stabilized Redwood Burl has been one of the woods that has increased in demand the most over the past couple years.

A lot of people (myself included) take redwood for granted just because it is a name we are used to hearing.
But they don't think about the fact that Redwood only grows in a limited area making it sort of a rarity.
Plus it being protected and most of the good stuff comes from salvaged stumps and old stashes.
80%+ of the places we used to get redwood from are gone now.
I figure it will only be a handful of years before I am unable to get any of the good stuff except for old stock that someone has stashed.

I know this is a late response but....
The only people who play a didgeridoo around here tend to have dreadlocks and the cigarettes they smoke have an aroma that smells like a cross between a skunk and a Christmas tree.
