These blocks have been carbon dated to be 5460 years old. Some of the blocks have some figure as well.
This is from a huge oak tree that died and has been covered in mud and sediment for over 5000 years turning the wood a rich black and dark charcoal gray color.
These are extra large blocks that will work great for large handle knives or maybe a couple normal sized knives.
There are no visible flaws in these blocks which is unusual for bog oak.

This is natural wood. It has not been chemically stabilized or dyed.
Some makers prefer the non stabilized bog oak so they can carve and texture the wood. If you do a google image search for sandblasted morta pipes you will see how this wood looks sandblasted.
If you prefer stabilized, I have some at K&G getting stabilized (ready in a few weeks).
These blocks come with a paper copy of the carbon dating report for the log these blocks were cut from.

I ran out of this a while back but today I received another shipment of 5460 year old Bog Oak.
In this batch there are a bunch of nicely figured blocks with rays and flecks like you see on old antique oak furniture.
Next step is to clean it up and send it to K&G for stabilizing.

For those of you who don't know;
These blocks were cut from a huge oak tree that died and fell into the water 5460 years ago.
The tree was buried in the muck and sediment.
During that time the wood was absorbing the minerals and such from the sediment.
Now, 5460 years later the wood that started out as a white colored wood is now black.

I just finished adding a bunch of new blocks of African Blackwood to our web store.
Blackwood is a black/brown hardwood that polishes up beautifully and is very durable.
and.....it's not expensive.

There are several smaller pieces to be used as ferrule, spacer or half handle material.
And a bunch of full length pieces.
Some of these have unusual grain patterns as well.

At first glance the wood looks black. When in direct light there is a metallic golden brown flash that will appear.

Click on the photo to go to the Natural Hardwoods section of the web store where the new blocks are located.

On June 8th there will be a drawing to see who wins $100 credit in our web store. This way you can select just about anything you want and finally get some respectable handles on your knives.

Here is how the contest works.
Make a post with your guess what type of wood this is. Only one guess. The post number is your entry.
I will use the random number generator at random.org to pick the winning post number. This way everyone has a chance to win.

You can make additional entries to increase your chances by posting a new joke, funny story or something entertaining.

The wood is a native Oregon hardwood. But, it doesn't usually look like this.

Today I added a bunch of new stabilized blocks to our web store.
All of these were professionally stabilized by K&G, so you know they were done right.
Just click on the photos to go to where these are located in the web store.

1st are some blocks of figured Cascara Sagrada from NW California. This wood has very small pores and very three dimensional figure that has a metallic flash that seems to move around beneath the surface of the wood.

These are a couple extra long blocks of California Buckeye Burl. Great coloring and burl figure. Might be large enough for a couple handles.

These are some Old Growth Redwood Burl. A bit darker than normal Redwood.

These Koa blocks will be going into the store Monday or Tuesday.
Some High Grade, unusual Orange Hawaiian Koa. These are not dyed. This is the natural coloring. Not a color you see very often with Koa.

Everything in the store comes with a money back guarantee.
Free US Shipping.
$20 Flat Rate International Shipping or Free if the order is over $100
Volume discounts for larger orders are 10% if over $200, or 20% if over $500, or 30% if over $1000.

I just finished adding a 30 new stabilized blocks to our web store.
The wood is Spalted Sycamore from Southern California. Looks different than the Sycamore back east.
The blocks were cut quarter sawn to show off the rays and flecks that form a pattern that looks a lot like Snake Skin.
There are a bunch of normal-ish size blocks that range from $30 to $40 each. There are also some oversized blocks that range from $40 to $55 each.
Very bold patterns and unusual coloring in these blocks.
Everything in the store comes with a money back guarantee.
Free US Shipping.
$20 Flat Rate International Shipping or Free if the order is over $100
Volume discounts for larger orders are 10% if over $200, or 20% if over $500, or 30% if over $1000.

Click on the photo to go where the Sycamore blocks are located in the store.
Or, if you already have used this stuff on a knife, you are welcome / encouraged to post a photo. I know several of you guys have made some beautiful knives with this wood.

I am doing my spring cleaning and getting everything in order.
I have selected a few dozen pieces of stabilized and some natural wood and priced them at low clearance prices ranging from $10 to $30.
Nothing wrong with this wood other than it has been sitting here for too long. Last I looked there were about 50 items in the clearance section.
Some pieces are weird looking, some are pretty. It is up to you to decide which is which.
