    All sharpened up and repaired

Here is my $12 gun show find. A 7" deba that had seen better days. After spending about 3 hours and wearing a big groove into a 180 grit Norton stone, it cleaned up. Another hour across Bester/ Beston 500 grit/1200 grit stones and polished with a a 5000 grit Suehiro Rika and a leather strop...

    Anybody read Kanji?

I picked up this cool Deba (looks almost symmetrical) at a funshow the other day. Can anyone decipher the writing and tell me who made it? Advice on fixing the knicks would also be welcome. Thanks in advance.

    Arfy's food.

I do love to cook, but I'm not a professional chef by any stretch of the imagination. However, good eats are almost a passion. I will admit that this rib roast got just a shade more done that I would like, but I have a new probe lead coming for my digital thermometer. BTW, everything is cooked...

    New carbon in the mail!

Got me some new carbon today, courtesy of Yaxell and Rakuten. Nothin' real special, just a 165mm Aogami #2 santoku (I know), and a 240mm SK-5 yanagiba. The santoku has fairly minimal F&F, and a minor grind defect at the tip, but, it is super thin and has a nice distal taper. It was usably sharp...

    Homemade strops on the cheap.

I whipped up these 16" X 3" (the leather part) the other day for a grand total of $9, which is what the 48" X 4" oak board cost me at Home Despot. A friend of mine who does leather work gave me some blem leather for free, and I already owned a can of contact cement. Woo-hoo!

    I was up past midnite....

.....discovering that my sharpening skills are the weak link in the chain. I just got my set of core stones from Dave Martell (thanks for the lighting fast shipping, very pleasant surprise:)) and decided to try them out on a 8" Forgecraft that I'm re-working. I haven't had any problems...

    Coticule?

I bought this stone at a yard sale (you'll see this as a common theme in my threads.:D ). It was dished and dark and $1. So I bought it and flattened it out on my belt sander. It showed a nice yellow stone that flattened pretty quickly on the sander. Does this look like a coticule to you guys...

    My humble knife collection.

Here are few of my knives. My favorite so far, a 270mm Hiromoto AS gyuto. My latest addition, a 255mm Yaxell Zen sujihiki. Great knife for the $$, and pretty darn good knife over all. My first and only bread knife. I can't believe I went so long without one, this thing is...

    Yaxell Zen

I'm not a professional reviewer by any means, so please bear with me. I have been bitten by the knife bug recently, and have greatly increased my collection in very short time. Last week, I was looking around, and I realized that I didn't have a sujihiki. So after a very short bit of looking...

    Gay Blade?

I bought this 8 incher back in the late 90s, and it was my first real chef's knife. It was pretty beat up, bent tip, knicked edge. But I straightened it out and sharpened it and used it for ten years til I finally picked up a Shun 8" chef's knife at a gun show couple of years ago for $70. I...
