    Shapton Pro 1000 vs 2000

I don't see much reason behind having both the 1k and 2k, why would you want both? Keep in mind I already have a 320 for coarse repair/thinning. It is good to hear you also like the 2k finish for your kitchen knives, that seems to be a common theme.

    Shapton Pro 1000 vs 2000

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It seems a few people have had good results going straight from 320-2k, so I'll probably pick up a 2k one of these days and see how it goes. I'm not all that concerned with feedback or finish, I just want a quick/minimalist way to make my knives sharper, and it...

    Shapton Pro 1000 vs 2000

Greetings all! I currently have a Shapton Kuromaku 320, and an Imanishi 1k/6k combo stone. I'm interested in going all splash n go, so would like to get a Shapton or two for use along with the 320. Typical recommendation seems to be 320/1000/5000, but I'm wondering if anyone has just gone from...

    Beginner whetstone recommendation

100-500 grit: Coarse stone - Used for fast metal removal. This includes thinning, repairing chips, and reprofiling. Not usually necessary if you take good care of your knives except for an occasional thinning (which you won't need to do for awhile). 600-2000 grit: Medium Stone - Used for...

My new Shapton Pro Glass Stones

Good to hear, that's more the pricing I was hoping for. I'll poke around at some local shops once I get a couple more Shaptons.

    Howdy!

Yikes, yeah those are significantly out of my league. Certainly nice to look at though. I was thinking more along the lines of a Carbonext or Tojiro PM or something like that, two of those you posted don't even have prices listed, that rarely means they're low cost ;). I prefer having tools...

My new Shapton Pro Glass Stones

Guess I need to look locally, it was something like $20 each online.

    Thinning Finish

Thanks for the info. I don't mind the part I thin being scratched, I'd just like the rest of the knife to look "normal" again. That should help me track how consistent I'm being too.

My new Shapton Pro Glass Stones

How much did the glass cost? I looked around online and it was crazy expensive. I suppose a local retailer might be cheaper.

    Thinning Finish

So I just tried thinning my knife for the first time, and think I've got it down now. I have quite a few scratches all over the knife from the learning process. What sort of finish do knives typically have? Is it worth restoring? Anyone ever put a 1k/5k finish on the knife body?

    Newbie whetstone recommandation

I think a 1000, 5000, and flattening plate will be all you need.. If you're buying internationally, get a coarse stone because shipping will be expensive. Don't use it until you are skilled with the 1000/5000. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you can accomplish those two.

    Howdy!

Well the first time took 2 and a half years, the second time was just 6 months! I think with the new coarse stone I can cut it down to 3 if I really focus.

    Howdy!

Greetings from TX everyone! I've been sharpening my Artifex on an Imanishi 1k/6k combo for about 3 years. I was slacking bigtime on the sharpening, but decided to step it up about 6 months ago. I've been keeping up with it quite well, and just got a Shapton Pro 320 to thin the knife. So far...
