    Stone for thinning

@tarnschaf Extremely coarse stones such as this are probably not a good idea. There is a point of diminishing returns where coarser does not mean faster, it just means deeper scratches that are harder to remove. Further a dressing stone is probably of a very hard bond if it is similar to...

I have a slice of this stone cut for the Edge Pro. It, and photos of the SP SII 3000 I have previously seen are olive green. In your photo it looks yellow, though one end appears a bit to the green. Is that photo representative of actual color? I wonder if it has changed. Mine is similar to...

Abrasives in Micron Scale: Grand Logarithmic Grit Chart

I uploaded a new copy with changes to the Shapton column. I am treating this as a bug fix and not incrementing the revision count, as the old copy was up for only a few days and no prints or customized editions were produced. Shapton now marks the Glass Stone series similarly to the Rock Star...

    Charting Shapton stone lines

If anyone is still following this I have a proposal I would like to check with the members. I am thinking of renaming the Shapton column to Kuromaku, eliminating the grades that do not exist within that line, and adding the stone colors. There seems to be general agreement that the Kuromaku...

    Stone for thinning

@tcmeyer Ah, I thought I recognized the handle but I wasn't sure you were the same person. Some people thin as part of every sharpening; I believe Murray Carter suggested this in one of his videos. Some here also like spending a lot of time on the stones, considering it "Zen" rather than boredom.

    Charting Shapton stone lines

I see that Shapton.co.jp has been updated, the Glass Stone line has the new markings, and the FAQ includes: I had an inkling that the change in marking might be accompanied by a change to JIS R 6001 compliant composition, given the nearly perfect alignment of values, but explicitly it is not...

And I just released GLGC revision 15 after deciding I couldn't wait for Shapton's changes. :dancingchicken:

Revision 15 is live. As always this forum software caches an older version for a time, so load the file directly from my site to see the new version.

    The Turkish Oilstone Matter

I searched for "rcooper29" on both ebay.com and ebay.co.uk and found nothing. Is this a private listing?

    That d*mn courier thread.

I live a couple of miles from a FedEx hub, but they don't transfer from FedEx to USPS at that location, so when I order something by "Smart Post" I think they call it, I see my packages arrive in town then head for another hub 130 miles away.

Effective "grit size" of natural stones

@stringer @captaincaed @ethompson @cotedupy I would like to credit your assistance in the README file, unless you prefer that I do not. Please let me know if I should use your moniker, a real name, or omit you.

What Is Your Go-To Coarse Stone For Heavy Lifting?

Unless that #320 is an extremely aggressive type (brazed diamond?) I would say it is still much too fine if "real thick" is like I am imagining. Something between #60 and #120 is where I would aim. BYXCO Manticore, 100 grit 3M Cubitron II paper, Zandstra FOSS coarse-side, etc. I don't think a...

Is adding a 3000-4000 grit stone going to be any benefit to a beginner?

    Stone Findings

Maybe?! I am happy to see a company putting effort into the gag. I used to check Think Geek every April 1st because they went all out on it. GritOMatic is playing too. :)

    Thoughts On Pull Through Sharpeners?

Roughly and generally speaking for common knives, turn the black factory grind into the wine-color profile by grinding just above the shoulder of the edge bevel. This drawing is only the edge, not the entire blade height.
