I like the way it came out and an gonna try it with some better wood

It doesn't appear you left any room for a pin to be used to prevent the blade from slipping out of the saya.
 
That type won't have a pin. The saya is but up against back end of the blade. You lift on the handle to pull it out.
 
Almost too snug. Next i will try it with a pin. But I'm happy with this one overall. I think with the friction fit I got more lucky than anything else it kinda just all worked out.
