    I finally got my radius platens I will try my hand at some single bevels and some experimental grinds.

    What are they made of? It looks kind of like stone... And do they have a 1/2 coating of something?

    The platens are probably used for grinding the ura. They are like a section of a big Japanese wheel when the belt runs over them.
