Vise Advice

This weekend I am going to start refining my new sharpening station, but I also want to attach a vise to the bench.

There are a ton of vise options out there, so are there some qualities that make some better for knife duties than others (size, mounts, material etc.) I am sure any of them would work, but if something is better, then I might as well invest in that instead.

I have found the Stanley multi angle vises to be very useful. I have two of them in my workshop and they are versatile and stable enough for my work.

You can find a nice knifemakers vice at Jantz Supply, multiple angles, and looks quite solid.

I think a medium-large machinist vise (vintage Wilton) would be very useful in any workshop. For angled setup, I like a pipe vise that could be mounted in your machinist vise or bolted to a bench.

Are there any welders on this forum who could make pipe-vise that looks like this. This could be a good item to trade for.

Alternatively, one can buy one for about $150-200 shipped. Pricey, but is could be very useful for handle work and detailed work.

I just use a woodworking vise for most things, and clamp a handscrew in it for angled type work. I have a machinist vise as well. There are too many options, I think!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Now I have a lot to choose from and now I have to narrow it down.
