Thread: Coticule?

    Coticule?

I bought this stone at a yard sale (you'll see this as a common theme in my threads. ). It was dished and dark and $1. So I bought it and flattened it out on my belt sander.
It showed a nice yellow stone that flattened pretty quickly on the sander. Does this look like a coticule to you guys? Definitely a natural stone of some sort.

    probably is. =D

only way to find out is to sharpen a knife or a straight razor with it.

Not really. A pic of the side would help, but it doesn't look like any coticule I've ever seen.

A good pic of the side will help identify if this is a coticule or not.

Want me to sand off the dark coating? It is definitely a single stone.

no need, it the sides were coated then it is not a coticule, it could be Arkansas

The sides weren't coated from the factory. They're coated with 50 years or so of gunk.

    I see,
the way to tell if the stone is coticule, is to look at the side. Coticules either come as natural combo with Belgian Blue or are backed by slate.

Oh, OK. Must be something else then, as it's definitely one piece of stone. I guess translucent Arkansas can be yellow, and I doubt I'm so lucky as to have gotten a honyama.
