One of the guys here was cutting back some overgrown blackberry bushes.
This was buried in the weeds. Not sure what it is yet, but it weighs a lot for it's size.

Maybe its a big rock -

Oh sorry - if its that big it would be a stone!

that looks like quite the find. I look forward to seeing a cross section

Not a rock, but I did cut through a couple just cutting this chunk.

It's red wood but not Redwood.
Hopefully I can get some solid pieces large enough for handle material.
Otherwise there will be some decent ferrule material.

The wood is Manzanita Burl.
I didn't realize that until I cut the 1st rock......I mean chunk of wood.
Fortunately the Manzanita Burl grows in volcanic soil so the rocks aren't very hard.
Manzanita is a shrub that looks like a purple trunk Rhododendron.
Dense, hard wood.
We use it a lot to carve bowls for our galleries.

if you can get 2 handles out of it, I want them. one of my favorite woods.

I gotta call your bs on finding this in some random blackberry bushes.
If so....I gotta say, great find!

It didn't grow there. The burl hunters offload truckloads of manzanita on the back of the wood yard where it sits waiting to be pressure washed.
Very likely it was pushed aside and the blackberries grew over it.
Our wood yard with whole burls, slabs and burl caps covers a few acres of the grounds here.

This pile of manzanita burls is about 40 feet long.
These are dirty ones waiting to get washed.

'The burl hunters' sounds like another one of these 'reality' shows ;) Nice stash, Mark!

I forgot, you live in a land where the burl is plentiful.

Great find Mark. I would love a block or 2 if its not all spoken for yet! :) Message me when ya get a chance.

God Bless
Randy

I was able to get more out of this burl than I thought.
But, I think I will send it to K&G for stabilizing just to play it safe.
When they get back Son and Randy will get first choice, since they asked.

This stuff back yet?

dammit! I was dreaming about this stuff.lol too bad I don't need scales or I would jump all over this. Thanks, Mark. I didn't forget about our deal. I may have some free time soon to finish it up.

I will have to look to see if I can salvage some short pieces.
1st I have to find where I put the rejects.
