Hi,

I need a recommendation for a magnetic strip. I'm looking for a 24" wood strip that looks great. I'm currently looking at Marko's and one from Uusi. Does anyone have experience with either or another recommendation?

Here are the pros and cons to each as I seem them.

Marko: http://www.tsourkanknives.com/index...y-figured-maple-or-walnut/category_pathway-18
- Looks great
- Love to support KKF vendors
- Surely top quality workmanship and strong magnets
- Interesting, semi-trapazoidial shape. Anyone know if this is functional or just a design element?

-Only negative for me is that the strip is one piece with keyhole mounting brackets.

Uusi: http://uusi.us/collections/kitchen/products/puukko-knife-rack
- Looks great
- Love the two piece mounting system with the dove tail joint

- Not sure about the strength of the magnets
- Not a KKF vendor

Also, found a couple of nice looking strips on Etsy. Not sure about ordering from there...

Thanks!

I made my own. Bought a 1x3x24" piece of maple at HD and some magnets from CMS Magnetics. Stained and finished the wood, routed some 1/2" holes in the back for the magnets and was good to go.
Fun project and it looks and works great.

I've three and while I think they are a great value, there are some shortcomings.

Standard offerings are 12 and 18 inches. Price 30-40 bucks. Cool. I got a quote on a 22 inch and it was about 130. For that I am still looking.

The OP is looking for a 24 inch. Two 12s would be an easy answer but there is a "dead" spot on last inch of all of mine. That would work out to 2 inches of no knife in the middle.

There's a lot of love for Mag Bloks, but mine was enough of a stinker that I wouldn't get another. And I mean that both literally and figuratively: It stank. And it stank. Very poor strength, stained out of the box, insufferably greasy, and also, it stank. Support from Benchcrafted was nonexistent. Replaced it with some generic strip off Amazon that served me well until its retirement.

I don't want to hijack the thread at all, but am very interested to know where folks hang magnetic strips in their home kitchens. I haven't been able to figure that one out very well, so I have two wood blocks on the countertop (a Gerber and a Shun) -- both large blocks with lots of slots, but they take up lots of space. I'd be interested to know where folks place magnetic strips for both convenience and safety.

I recently got a maple Mag Blok and found that the last couple inches on one side were not usable. All of my knives, both stainless and carbon would not hold well there, and my gyuto would shoot 45 degrees! All knives held well on the rest of the blok, all the way to the other end. Customer service was great from benchcrafted, but they felt it was my knives. They even sent me a return label. They tested and said it was fine. They offered to send me another. I took them up on the offer since I thought it was still worth the price. They can seem a bit curt over emails and I do find it odd how it could be all my knives only on one end of the board, but, I can't complain about how quickly they responded. Curious if #2 will have the same issue.

All good suggestions. I was looking for one and eventually made one myself (http://www.kitchenknifeforums.com/s...agnetic-knife-bar-(holder)-may-way?highlight=), but found the following design interesting: http://www.knifecraft.co.nz/

I have learned 2 things concerning the magnetic knife holders:
1) The holder should have 2 rows of magnets (or strips) so that your knife do not start to rock when you put them on the holder.
2) The holder should not be too close to the wall (I mean the distance between the blade and the wall), because you will have hard time to grab the handle comfortably OR not to accidentally hit the wall with the tip of your knife when picking it up - in particular with long blades. About 5cm works fine for me.

I also like the design of Marko's mag. holder very interesting and would like to know how does it work and what are the dimensions. Maybe Marko could chime in :)

EDIT: Also I find wider holders (the dimension along the blade) nicer to use. I have made mine 8cm wide.

I did and they look great! I don't speak German however! Shipping might also make things pricey.

Sorry if I came across as pushy on that as it was not my intentions if I did.

I am curious if one could not create their own strip by getting some nice veneer, some rare earth magnetic strips, and basically building, or having a local wood worker do it.
