I had a bunch of stag crown handle pieces that came from the estate of knife maker Ted Dowell.
They were old and white and kind of boring looking. I believe they are Blacktail deer crowns. But that is a guess.
So.....I called Brad at K&G and asked what he thought about dying them amber and then stabilizing them.
He was up for giving it a try. They just arrived today. I really like the way they turned out.
I will be posting these in our web store this evening. They will be fairly cheap because they didn't cost me much and I had fun with the experiment. It will be fun to see how these get used.
I thought they would be cool on a retro style carving set.

Very nice. I too am curious as to how those will be used.

Good job on the experiment. May open up new options.

I have them added to the web store now. The prices range from $10 to $30.
They are located in the Unusual Handle Materials Section.
If they don't all sell I might use a piece for a cane handle.
This stuff cuts and sands a lot like wood. The button end looks a lot like ivory when carved and sanded.
The bark portion of these will look dark brown with sanded areas amber colored.
I cut off the end of a piece and it looks like the dye penetrated pretty good and the stabilizing agent hardened up the interior nicely.
