Clearing out before an estate sale and I ran across a rustic and very sharp (still) Dexter 7" knife. It has 39714HG DEXTER on the handle and what looks like a masonic compass across the word DEXTER. If it is indeed a Dexter it has to be a very early model and looks like it could be from the late 19th c when the Dexter name was introduced. Can anyone shed any light on this item? It is in good condition for it's age but has had some extensive use.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the information. Is it possible that extensive use of this knife would have shortened the blade by continual sharpening over many years, or would this have only have happened if it had been deliberately shortened to suite a different purpose of perhaps have been damaged?

From this "serial #" is it possible to know it's year of manufacture?

Thanks again
