Typically, we see a wavy pattern on the back side of a traditional single bevel Japanese knife where hagane meets jigane.
I am talking about the patten for kasumi knives.
Does anyone know how it is created?
Is the pattern really showing the boundary between jigane and hagane?
or
Is it just "patterned" with some kind of etching agent?

Thanks. K

it is indeed the part where the jigane and hagane meet... the polish can be done with stones, powders, and/or fingerstones to bring out the contrast.

I hope others with more knowledge will chime in, but different steel types will show a different appearance when on both the same stone is being used, one being e.g. mat and another rather bright and shiny.
