My sister (Lynda)wants to get some nice J knives as presents for her sister in-laws. They will be presents from her and my brother in law.

Lynda lives in Vancouver and want to get stuff that won't be stuck in customs or has a big tax due on entering so they want to buy in Canada. Anyone have any suggestions? TIA Tom

What I am aware of:
All the below stores will ship the merchandise...

In Toronto you have:
http://toshoknifearts.com/
http://knifetoronto.com/
Lefty (Member of KKF): http://sharpandshinyshop.com/

Quebec:
www.paulsfinest.com/‎

BC/Alberta:
knifewear.com‎

Also there is a store in Seattle Area, which is close to Vancouver :)

------------EDIT

BTW, many non US vendors (from Japan and Europe) will put the price tag of the item you want them too. Anything below $50 is usually tax free. You have to be very unlucky to have your package be inspected if declared price is low.

Question for you guys that import: how often (if ever) do you end up being charged customs? I assume that a lot of you will request that the seller lower the shipping value just in case customs is applied, though of course you run the risk of losing out on insurance reimbursments should things go awry.

bought from japan direct not long ago knife was here in 3 days, Seller marked as a gift so no customs issues or duty charged

Probably not always effective. As for contents, I know some people also label the knife as 'kitchen tool'.

In the case of one seller (JCK) it is always effective. Koki will have your order to your door direct from Japan with blinding speed, extra charge free and for a grand total of 7$. A few months ago I ordered a knife from JCK and a stone from Tosho on the same day. The knife arrived 3 business days before Tosho even got around to shipping the stone.

there is also santoku office supply in yaletown, but knifewear has a larger selection.

The international package can always be inspected in the customs if it looks suspicious and/or not credible. In this case you will have to pay the duty on the amount that the officer/expert appraises.
