To my wife & the wives of all chefs: I'm sorry I/we had to go to work before you were awake.
I'm sorry I got home while you were asleep.
I'm sorry I could not buy you flowers nor could I be romantic in any way.
In my defence there is left over chocolate and orange tart in the fridge.... Will that do?
I'm sorry I'm going to be dead to the world and grumpy in the morning... Then go to work again.
Daughter: I'm sorry I missed your first day at kindy... I enjoyed the photos.
Ordinary humans: I hope your food was great and you had a great night... I'm a little jelous.
