    Honu Mana Wa Handles gallery

Some of you may have noticed that Iíve added a Hobbyist/Craftsman tag to my account. Iíd like to take this opportunity to reintroduce myself and to introduce you all to my new endeavor, Honu Mana Wa Handles. Honu is the Hawaiian word for the sea turtle, which is a symbol of peace, good luck, humility, and long life. Mana refers to spiritual energy.

Iíve been working on my handles for about eight months now and I feel Iíve gotten to the point that Iím comfortable sharing them with the rest of you. All of my handles are constructed with internal dowels securing the ferrules and end caps, and are hand sanded and polished to 8000 grit (1micron). I will not be taking custom orders, but I am open to ďrequestsĒ. If there is something youíre interested in let me know. If it sounds interesting Iíll put something together and give you first option, but no commitment on anybodyís part. Now, a few photos (Iím only showing the successes of course)

My first handle was this one made of amboyna burl and Gabon ebony. I chose to mount it on a deba for the simple reason that I made the tang hole too damn big to fit on anything else.

My next attempt was two matching sets for my Yoshikane nakiri and gyuto. One set was amboyna burl with Malaysian blackwood and the other was afzalia xylay with dyed maple. Choosing which set to use was no problem because the afzalia xylay came out orange and boring (I also made the holes too big againÖsigh).

    Finally Mikey!

Awesome handles! I'd need to check if there are any flights from SPb to Hawaii. Need to spend some time there learning from you and Stefan

At the same time I did two paring/petty sized ones. This one is amboyna (I really like amboyna) and desert ironwood.

I did this one out of amboyna and kingwood (decided I wasnít real fond of the kingwood, oh well) for my Takeda ko-bunka. I relieved the underside of the ferrule to make it more comfortable to use a pinch grip when working on the board.

Nice work, Mikey, congrats to the new status. Funny, some time ago I had been thinking that I should maybe develop a 'brand' or give this a name, use a symbol/icon etc., and it definitely also would have been a honu.

I changed a few things for this next set. I changed the proportions a little bit, made sure I was more consistent on the side bevels, and gave up on doing faceted end bevels.

Large gyuto handles in Philippine ebony w/amboyna, red mallee w/African blackwood spacer and snakewood ferrule, and chechen rosewood w/cocobolo.
