So I think I finally have a set I can live with. To recap (previous threads below), my price limit was $280 MAX and my fiancé wanted a nice set to keep on the counter, regardless of the knife manufacturers used. Both novice cooks with minimal knife skill. My original idea was to get a Messermeister Meridian Elite 7-piece @ $270 or the Zwilling Pro S 7-piece @ $199. I think the below is what I'm going to do...

1) Schmidt Brothers Midtown block @ $35 (sale)

2) Tojiro DP 7" Santoku @ $49.95

3) Messermeister Meridian Elite 8" chef and 3.5" paring @ $139.95

4) Victorinox Forschner Offset 9" Bread Knife @ $19.95

For a total of $244.95. I went with the Mess because I'm not totally confident to go full Japanese yet. That and I don't trust my fiancé with nicer knives yet. Thoughts?

You could do a lot worse, above looks like it will meet your initial needs. Will suggest you try the Messr paring if you can before ordering if it's a knife you plan on using - the handles are uncomfortably small for me. (6 ft w XL hands). Prob work fine for your lady.

I remember from orig post that you are in NY. Any chance of registering at Korin? You're friends will all think you're the smartest guy they know and you might end up with a Gyuto as a wedding present.

Good luck and lest I forget - welcome to the forum. Pls post after the dust settles on how you like the knives.
