Places to eat in Atlanta, GA

My son (8) and I are heading for a father son trip to Atlanta and I was hoping for some good suggestions on places to eat. We're both pretty adventurous but trip is low cost so hole in the walls are welcome. Pizza, tacos, burgers? Any direction is appreciated.

I guess the first question is where are you staying? Are you staying in the city? and if so, what part? Some of my lower cost recommendations in the city are:

The food is drek, but the Varsity is pretty classic--hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, etc. The FO (Frosted Orange) is actually good--a milkshake that tastes like a combination of orange sherbert and baby aspirin. Plus you can get a paper hat.

Farmburger. It's owned by the Farm 255 guys from Athens. I can also second ESS, I haven't eaten there but have been to all the other Acheson restaurants. You could also try for the Holman and Finch burger, a guy I know worked there a while back and claims it's the best ever. This guy owns a burger joint that is one of the best in New Orleans so he probably knows what he's talking about, but I haven't tried it.

Never mind on the Holman and Finch burger, it's a little late for an eight year old. You should go to World of Coca Cola, it will be as much fun for you as your son.

We are staying in Buckhead with a friend. We're doing a Braves games and he wants to go go-cart driving. Other than that we're still trying to figure out what we want to do.

All those sound great Rodney. Donuts sound incredible right now.

Enjoy the trip. All the places I mentioned are at least convenient to Buckhead. If you want to look at "non-traditional" burgers. You may want to try Flip Burger. There is one in Buckhead. The original is in Midtown.

If you are going go kart racing in Roswell. Let me know, I can come up with additional places there to eat at.

Are you talking about Andretti? That's where I was thinking.

Yes...that's the one. The cafe at Andretti's is marginal, at best. So, you will probably want to head to the historic area if you want to eat. A lot of the places in Historic Roswell are slightly more upscale. My favorite place is Table and Main. For more casual, you may want to try Greenwoods (southern), Pure (mexican), Salt (gastropub), Roswell Tap (pizza, beer, bar food), There is also a Thumbs Up Diner location in Roswell. They are only open for breakfast and lunch though. If you are a big beer drinker try Taco Mac. They have locations all over Atlanta. But, they have 100+ beers on tap and as much or more by bottle. The food is just typical bar food but the draft beer list is great. A lot of people like Swallow at the Hollow for BBQ. I personally don't care for it. But, it's a style thing. It is Georgia style BBQ and I prefer Texas style. But, the locals love it. The are also owned by the same people who own Greenwoods and they are right next to each other. If you are dining at one place, you can actually order something off the menu from the other place. Always a good thing to know. Being that you are from Alabama. You may want to try Dreamland BBQ. But, you may be used to them already.
