Can anyone enlighten me as to why these things exist and why they are distributed?

They have to require some resources (though I suspect minimal) to produce but there is no apparent attempt at revenue generation.

What am I missing here?

I think they're mostly efforts to raise a site's ranking in google searches. If you could get your website's url into a comment on the New York Times (you can't), that would generate some serious google-fu.
