Welp, I've got a 240 Western in the works. The steel is W2 and handle materials are up in the air. :scratchhead: Maybe stainless hardware.

Anyhow, here's a pic:

How about some redwood? Everyone seems to hate working with it, but looking at the blade...this seemed appropriate:

I vote for something blonde...............I think the figure stands out a lot better in the lighter colored woods. I did one in some locust burl that is one of my faves.

redwood is one of my favorites. Spalted maple or pecan would be killer.

I agree with wood of some type. The profile on that looks SWEET!

MMM....so many sweet ideas here!

The blade is all finished until final clean up and ready for the bolster.

The bolster is getting hand carved at this point.

I love it Ian, thanks for sharing this journey of yours with us.

That redwood will look pretty cool, but blonde doesn't sound too bad either. Blonde ebony?
None the less, very thrilled to see the final product!

That blade is begging for some understated elegance in the handle. Bog Oak. Minimal (but some) trimmings.

Still up in the air on material, but I have a bit of shaping conceptualized (sans bolster).

Ian, what's the size on these? I'm trying to picture it with the handle, but my mind keeps going back to a gyuto and that handle isn't helping:)

I should say that it looks comfortable.

The swell (the middle) is about 26mm tall and the 24mm wide. I'm going to make a test handle and see how it works.

What's the thickness of that gorgeous blade at the heel?

My take on the handle material: take a simple wood, smth classy, and let the blade shine. The blade is the star and nothing should destract from its beauty!

I ended up going with spalted maple from Burl Source. I love the look of this stuff.

I have the rough profile cut out.

This is tapered and starting the palm swell.

The handle is starting to take it's final form.

Finished and a quick buff.

Nice! Look forward to seeing more pix of that bolster. Love your WIP's.

You would offer a western handle now...

I kid! Kind of.

Looks fantastic, Ian. Might need to think of a new project for you now....

Thanks guys. I put it in the store HERE.

Thanks guys and congrats to the new owner. This one is sold.

Thanks, glad you guys are liking the videos. I think it's helpful to get something (my hand) in there to give the size some relativity.

That was EXACTLY what I had in mind when i posted that. Too hilarious!
