Octagonal WA rehandle

I am about to change the handle on a not to expensive stainless japanese santoku knife that my wife bought a couple of years ago, as a first rehandle project. It has an oval hoo wood handle at the moment and I plan to change that to a octagonal handle.
So over to my question. Is the octagonal handle oval or round in the overall shape (I guess its oval). I have never been really close to one, and it's hard to tell by just looking at images on the net.

If you were to round the angles it would be a thin oval.
