Hi all,

i haven't been on the forum much lately because after my kit got stolen i haven't had the funds or care to be around knives. Although a lot of you will know who I am.

I placed an order with Pierre about 1.5 years ago for a gyuto, and put a deposit down.

Pierre has had little contact with me, the agreement was 1 year, he never did give me a follow up for materials etc and After numerous emails not being returned I am starting to feel ripped off.

I have done business with many makers on this Forum and never had an issue.

I sent him an email almost a month ago asking for a knife or my money back, I was told that he had some personal issues and would not refund my money. Ok, well I deserve a knife or I have been robbed blind...

Is anyone in contact with Pierre?

Will Paypal back me at all in this matter?

I am extremely disappointed by this, and the money i put down would go a long way towards bills for myself, He may be struggling right now, however its my money and he never fulfilled the agreement, I would at least appreciate a response from you Pierre.

He made a recent post recently about having pretty serious health issues due to an accident at his job. I mean I feel he should refund the money after it having been so long but hopefully you can get in further contact with him.

Yea, tricky situation. If you can hang on for a couple more months I would. I don't think you have anything to worry about regarding getting ripped off - it's just a set of bad circumstances.

I'm probably going to upset a lot of people here and maybe i should keep my mouth shut but I disagree.
It's great we're all friendly here, it's a community, i get it, i love that, i've benefited from it tremendously.
What's 'tricky' about the situation though??
Payment was made for work, to be completed in an extremely reasonable amount of time. The work hasn't been done and the customer has reportedly been blown off.
That's bad business, period. No matter what the personal circumstance on part of the craftsperson.
I sometimes get irritated how sycophantic this forum can get, endlessly supporting vendors and craftspeople even when they fail to deliver repeatedly.
A community that cannot maturely discuss and deal with criticism is not functional or entirely healthy.
A 'forum' for discussion is supposed to be exactly that, open and unbiased.
Sorry I just had to say it. I wish no one ill will, just a shade more accountability and honesty overall here.
Cheers
Matteo

Tricky situation indeed. Pierre is not the only vendor on this forum to be affected by health, nor will he be the last. The thing to remember, or even try to sympathize with, is that this craft is their livelihood (for most craftsman that is). If they can't make/sell product and they are suffering from these afflictions then it is a double loss for them.

On the other hand, the professional way to handle these situations, from the vendor's standpoint, would be to maintain an open line of communication with the customers and keep them plugged-in to the delays and updated expectations. That being said, I haven't experienced anything analogous to what Pierre is going through and cannot imagine how I would respond to the stress and weight of the situation.

I hope you can find a way to work things out with Pierre jgraeff. Not to mention, hope you find some good news soon Pierre and can get back on the mend!

Pierre owes the money back, at this point. The contract has been breached. The ethical and legal position is that Pierre owes the money back. Whether Jgraeff can compel compliance is another issue altogether. I don't know where Jgraeff lives, but if he doesn't live in Canada, litigation is unlikely to be cost effective. It sucks that Pierre is sick, and it sucks that Jgraeff has been the victim of a breach of contract.

Same here. 1 year and a $XXX deposit and no knife and no communication. It's to the point that I think I will see neither again.

In the best of all possible worlds, deposits would go into escrow accounts, but we all know that isn't how the world works.

I have been waiting even longer than the OP for my knives from Pierre but I have, at least had some responses from Pierre and some attempts by him to give me context. (I will say that the responses have not been as often nor detailed as I would like and require numerous emails to elicit a response.)

I don't think Paypal or one's credit card company can help, as I am pretty sure there is a limit on how old a payment can be and still get it reversed, but I would, of course be happy to be wrong.

Basically, this situation sucks for all concerned, because, as many people have pointed out. Pierre is clearly a very good guy who overextended himself, then had a horrible accident occur and now can't dig himself out very easily.

But as many posters have also pointed out this was also a commercial transaction, involving a non trivial amount of money to the buyer and the money was not put into escrow or otherwise segregated as it should have been.

I mean at this point sure you may have spread yourself thin and be in the ****. But I feel it isn't too hard to spend an hour or so trying to communicate with all your customers. They paid substantial sums of money and for one to not reply or keep saying the same thing is unacceptable.

Thanks for all the responses!

Wow I had no idea he had ripped off so many of us, this is really not right. I believe he is a good guy, but I feel that he should not be allowed to operate on this forum anymore.

You are right and the money should not have been spent, it shouldn't have been placed in escrow. This is extremely unprofessional and honestly theft among a lot of us.

I can understand his condition and I do feel bad for him, however this was a business transaction.

I'm in Florida so it would be quite hard to do anything about it... I would honestly consider legal action if possible considering I'm finding out there are numerous members here that have been ripped off.

It really sucks overall.

Gentlemen, in light of Pierre's current medical situation, please allow him a little time to collect his thoughts and respond to the concerns raised in this thread.
This is not a veiled request to 'back off', but please be mindful that this is a sensitive issue that could unintentionally go way off topic.

Gentlemen, in light of Pierre's current medical situation, please allow him a little time to collect his thoughts and respond to the concerns raised in this thread.
This is not a veiled request to 'back off', but please be mindful that this is a sensitive issue that could unintentionally go way off topic.
Thanks for understanding.

Ecchef,

I respect what you are asking here, and I agree and will allow time for him to respond, however it shouldn't be viewed as in poor him etc etc. there have been many of us that have been "ripped off" and we deserve to be repaid or to be given the knives we ordered. Poor
Health can only go so far, I do really feel for the guy and I can understand he's having hard times. I am as well, I live on a 25k salary, pay child support etc. everyone has there problems but it doesn't make what is going on here ok.

This will be my last post for now, I appreciate everyone's views and concerns and I hope this eill work out for everyone.

EChef, I've been thinking about how to express what you just said very well. I'm not wearing my moderator hat but can see no purpose in piling on and taking the thread away from it's original intent. Let Pierre respond and go from there.

J, I hope this resolves to your satisfaction.

For the binary guys - I wrote a love letter back in college using Hollerith cards. Did not get me laid.

Oh crap, you must be as old as me...I remember having to write a program just to be able to write a document...thought these computer thingies would never be useful...

Good morning guys.I got an email notification of some activity on the forum, so I logged in. I admit I havnt been there to contact you all lately, and I owe an opology.Honestly I cant remember ever feeling this $hitty about the position I put myself in, and have left a few of you in. I havent been in the shop since May. In reality its been a bad year or so for me, I wont get into the details. I really respect those of you giving me the benifit of a doubt so to speek, thank you. Those feeling jaded, or offering legal advice, I respect that to, and understand your points of view.
Financially, things are worse than tight, I'm falling behind monthly. I have dipped into every resource I have to stay on top. Again I'm not going into details. I had a CT scan, as I mentioned in another post, and am expecting some sort of surgery to come from the results. Between the results coming back, and "whenever" our medical system gets its ducks in a row, I plan to get as much done as I can. Right now my lungs arent playing nice, I lost my sense of smell, and am seriously short of breath.

Yes I'm an a$$hole. Yes I have handled things inadequately. My communication has been poor, I havent been on line much at all, hoping absence would maybe let some time pass, till I had something productive to show, or to say.

If you can bear with me, I will fill your orders. All I ask is understanding and time. I will strive to keep communication lines more open. Again my bad.

If anyone gets it, I do, Pierre. You're an honest guy who is having a **** year. You'll get it straightened out.

This situation is challenging for everyone.
I really hope that something can be worked out that is satisfactory, if not ideal, for all involved.
Pierre, wishing you the best in your recovery--hope your health improves quickly. And (as someone not directly involved), I see a sincere desire to be able to fulfill these orders for your customers.

All the best in recovering, I know its a hard time especially when you can't be working. As much as it sucks and is easier to ignore it all try and just communicate with everyone on here and your customers, most are pretty understanding as long as they know what's going on.

Pierre,

Sorry to hear of more bad news. I hope the CAT scan is favorable.

As far as work owed me, please move my jobs to the end of your list, especially behind those of any who considered themselves wronged. I have no questions about your honesty.

Rick

Echo the above statement.

As Rick said, I am in no hurry for my knife so please put others ahead if it comes to it.

Just an update. This getting old thing sucks. Lungs are improving, getting a bunch of testing on the blood and heart now. Did a stress test yesterday. CT scan was inconclusive. More blood work today. Dr,'s not happy but cant pinpoint why. Not sure if its from the chemicals, just trying to get a handle on things... I got up on the right side of the sod today, so thats a good thing! LOL!

We need to grab a beer, my friend.

Pierre, I hope that your health regains it's strength and you can get back to doing what you love.

I'm genuinely sorry your health is bad. I have one previous example of your work which is amazing. I also have a $1300 deposit with you for a set of custom dammy clad steak knives from three years ago that was never finished and that I wasn't able to get clear communication from you abruptly on.

Do hope you get better. I think at this point I've already shown great patience trust and respect. Hope you will be able to make good once you're good.

Add me to the list. Paid over 2 years ago, have nothing but excuses. Pierre has also refused to refund me as well although terms and conditions of agreement have been broken.

Good luck everyone.
