I thought this was labeled wrong.
Yesterday went into town and made a quick stop at a little hardwood shop. They mostly sell inexpensive straight grain woods to cabinet makers. But I like to stop once in a while to see if they have anything unusual. I found this piece and thought it was labeled wrong. The landscape grain pattern made me think it was Ziricote but it was labeled Cocobolo. I figured that I would get it and be happy either way. Lighting was bad in the shop and there was a surface patina that had developed over the years. The lady in the shop said this piece had been on the shelf as long as she could remember. She said nobody wanted to pay the price for a small plank like this. I went ahead and bought it figuring worst case I would break even or use it for one of my own projects.
Well, to show you how much I don't know......it is definitely Cocobolo. There is no question when you cut Cocobolo and smell it's distinct spicy scent. Now I will cut this up into some knife handle blocks and save a portion for myself. I wish they would have had more like this.
