I understand the smith passed away, but does anyone know if the mantle has been taken up by anyone else?

If you go to Epicurean Edge's website you'll find some info and product from his predecessor. Just look under Asai I believe.
 
I too am confused. I guess Masami Asai made the akifusa knives that don't include the artisan/haruyuki/kagero (srs-15 yo knives, I know the kagero is a cut above the rest)? I noticed akifusa has a huge catalogue at their website most of which I've never seen for sale. Though the same could be said for most knife making outfits large or small from Japan.
