Yesterday was some great forging at a friends place. I got to do my first two san mai billets. One of them with really old and "poor" (lots of pattern in) wrought iron from stockholm grand hotel. So here's some pics, the vids on ig is me setting the weld on the san mai.

I thought you had changed shops when I saw the pictures and videos on IG :dazed:. Good stuff.

That looks good Robin! Do you usually forge the steel yourself, or do you buy top notch pre-forged steel, which you then shape, grind and hardens?

Thanks yea it was real fun. Yes most of the time I just cut, heat treat and grind. There's no difference for the finished product (if well done "fixing" the problems forging brings"). It's mostly just different ways of moving steel.

You've come a long way Robin. Looked like you were right at home with that power hammer

Thanks Mike. Yea real fun stuff, hope to revisit soon for some more wrought iron laminate.

I saw that. Our little Dalman is growing up so fast. Reminds me of Hiromune Takabas work or rougher forged tamahagane. Really nice heritage blade that I hope you either keep or remains in Sweden given its provenance.

I already have plans to #merica it back to the states.

heh, pretty sure this ones stays in Sweden. But I hope to make some more laminate with this steel at my friends soon.

I happened to catch a moment of makers pride today I think. I have my most annoying chef/customer/friend in the shop for two days. This is at the end of first day, with two waterquenched straight(ened) 125 sc blades, and two ready handles.

Now that is a tastefully done feather damascus. How does it feel when people say a knife is too pretty to use?
