IIRC the shape is called kurigata in Japanese, i.e. chestnut shape, makes a little more sense than D-shape.
 
most people in japan dont call them d-shaped... there are a lot of other names for them though... chestnut, shinogi, etc.
 
What is 'strangely shaped' in Japanese? Just so that I know how to call mine ;)
