My first waterstone was a King 800/4000 combo stone, which I liked, but I moved on to harder stones. After recently seeing the film
'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' and seeing the guys using a big King brick, I remembered that I liked the 800 but it was a little crunchy, and
the 1200 was too fine for a base stone (for tools). Anyway, I got a 1000 the other day, and like it... a lot. I can get a fresh edge of
good steel and a burr as quickly with this thing as I need, and I like the feel, too. Add in that's it's easy to flatten, and cheap- not bad!

I get the king stones mixed up, is this the newer 1k?

Not in my case; the one I'm talking about is the Deluxe 1k, which has been around forever.
I haven't tried the Hyper 1k, which you might be thinking of, and I'm happy with this one.

Yeah, the hyper is the new one. I've never had any real issues with the king 1k other than it feels sort of "meh" to me.
