I actually have had this knife for years (an ebay special). It is ugly, but it truly, actually, works! the holes release the food (great with cucumbers, onions, and carrots) and the line above then in the picture is actually a raised ridge about 1mm thick that pushes the food away from the blade. The steel is about equivalent to Global steel in sharpenability and edge retention.
