somebody gifted me a yanagi, it's a carbon steel cheapy, with awful handle. anybody know who dis is?

I just happen to own a few other tojiros, and the writing is similar yet very different. The only japanese I know is domo and don't touch my moustache, so I'm a terrible judge.
 
I have a couple of Tojiro's shirogami knives and they use the same box as the one in the OP.

The DP line has different boxes and the printing on the blades is quite a bit different than on the shirogami boxes.
