Hey everyone! I had a Cutco rep come out and overall I was impressed and seeing that I NEED new kitchen knives, I proceeded to ask my husband even though I knew the price was a little more than I planned. He is on a damascus kick so told me no. Well, now I have spent the past couple weeks looking for American made damascus kitchen knives with no prevail. So, here I am asking for help. Hope to find something soon!

Welcome...If I were going to buy a stainless damascus knife I would talk to these guys:

Devin Thomas
http://www.devinthomas.com/

HHH Knives
http://www.hhhcustomknives.com/

Delbert Ealy Damascus
http://www.ealyknives.com/ - Not sure if he does stainless damascus but his carbon steel is apparently not that reactive.

Not as cheap as cutco by a longshot...but if you want good stuff you don't want cheap right?

You could probably buy one Damascus knife for the price of a cutco set. But it would be a killer knife that would stay sharp a long time and would be handmade...you could get by with one nice knife in a home kitchen for sure. Maybe like 210mm chefs knife that is a little shorter at the heel. You could cut on the board, you could cut off the board, you could peel and slice with it.

Yes, there is good American-made damascus knives, but be prepared for sticker shock. And for what it is worth, I don't think we should exclude our fine neighbor up north in Canada, Pierre Rodrigue, as an option.

Just one other idea to throw out there: if the price is too much for a custom maker's damascus, one could always nab a Mr. Tanaka R2 damascus blade before the stock on those are depleted. They are truly beautiful, and there won't be any more made now that he has passed away.

Thanks everyone! I will definitely be looking at the options!

I see you are in Texas, Burkecutlery!!! That last knife has a GORGEOUS print! Do you do steak knives?

Have to mention Marko too, he's doing some great stuff.
Pierre too, but he's canadian.

Burke is not the maker of those, the last one is a Rader.
He does some beautiful (and pricey) work

While burkecutlery (Eamon) is very talented, that's the end result of a collaboration between damascus maker David Lisch and of an ABS master smith, Michael Rader.

Thanks for the correction! :)

Not a correction at all, just a finger in the right direction if you want one by Mr. Rader.
That pattern is called 'feather' and it is pretty popular.

As far as I am aware, there are no mass-produced American made damascus knives - all are made by custom knife makers. The prices for these knives will be quite a bit more than Cutco. Look to be spending at least $450-500 for a chef's knife (gyuto), and $300-350 for a small utillity/paring knife.

I'll add some custom makers to the four that G-rat mentioned.

Bill Burke (http://www.kitchenknifeforums.com/member.php/476-Bill-Burke) - Bill makes his own carbon damascus. See more of his work at The Epicurean Edge (http://www.epicedge.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=706&cat=Burke,+Bill,+M.S.)

Mario Ingoglia (http://www.kitchenknifeforums.com/member.php/416-RRLOVER) - Mario uses Devin Thomas stainless damascus.

Marko Tsourkan (http://www.tsourkanknives.com) - Marko uses Devin Thomas carbon damascus.

Stephan Fowler (http://fowlerblades.com/) - Stephan makes his own carbon damascus.

Adam Marr (http://marrknives.com/) - Adam uses Devin Thomas stainless damascus.

Murray Carter (http://www.cartercutlery.com/japanese-knives/kitchen-cutlery) - Murray makes his own carbon damascus.

Bob Kramer (http://www.kramerknives.com/home.htm) - Bob makes his own carbon damascus.

Good luck in your quest!

Rick

He's a brit though, if you're dead-set for it needing to be "american"

Will, or any of the makers can do a high contrast or a more muted damascus pattern.

Many of the knives are straight damascus, while some are damascus clad, meaning there is a core steel, surrounded by a damascus steel jacket.

All the makers I have communicated with have been great to talk to.

I had found only 1 company that did damascus as a mass production. They had a Japanese company make them for them. They no longer sell that line, just because they are wanting to go with a straight made in america.

:lol2: HA! I WISH I made knives like that!!! Texas is too dang hot for forging. Even Jim Bowie had his knife made by a blacksmith in Arkansas.

No, those were:
Devin Thomas
HHH Knives
Delbert Ealy
Michael Rader

In that order.

:) That was great... Texas is for sure extremely hot!

He's a brit though, if you're dead-set for it needing to be "american" (although i don't see the hype with made in america)

There are other countries I don't mind buying from but my first choice is always to support as local as I can.

Welcome to the forum CJ! You will find lots of people willing to point you in the right direction, there are many here very knowledgeable!

If you want stainless damascus, made in the U.S., Devin Thomas is your man. He might be your man regardless of the U.S. specification. As everyone else has stated, this stuff ain't cheap.

That is salty in the vid. if I remember right. It sure seems like his table.
