This showed up in the mail today from the Ukraine.

Very high grade Bog Oak. Carbon dated with ages from 1500 to 5500 years old.

It can be a big gamble importing woods from some countries.
When I was contacted by these guys in the Ukraine I was suspicious at first.
I asked about purchasing some sample material so I could see what it would be like first hand.
The wood arrived pretty quick and it is better than I expected.

Now I will send it to K&G to see how it does with stabilizing.
After that I will place a sizable order with these guys.

Looks like the oldest is the darkest.
But, I think I like the lighter stuff as well.
Sure it is only about 2 or 3,000 years old, but it looks good.

That's some cool stuff, love to see a finished handle with it.

man I am loving st11
That piece is quartersawn. The way it is cut produces the flecks.
The numbers on these pieces are so he can identify what logs I want pieces from.
I am thinking these will darken up a bit when stabilized. No matter what changes might take place, I love this stuff.
The supplier also offered to include copies of the carbon dating reports for the wood I order.

I have a couple of pieces from Germany that I had stabilized by K&G and they came out nice. The open pores of the oak make for a more rustc looking blank, but I like that. Mine were almost black, so there was not much darkening with stabilizing. Looking forward to seeing the outcome on these.

I am really, really impressed with these. Can't be cheap though

No where near as bad as Amboyna, Koa and Ironwood Burl.
The guy is being pretty reasonable so far, but shipping from Ukraine is a little spendy.

The way I figure it is;
Looks good
Is a sort of rare oddity
....and the mystical powers associated with Bog Oak.
Not that I believe that stuff......Just sayin

Here is an end shot of the 1/4 sawn piece to show how it is cut to show the flecks.

When the growth rings are at a right angle to the face of a block, oak will usually shows rays and flecks that look pretty cool.

3,000 thousand years old... and still not stable?

Soggy bog for sure.

:D

The wood actually has a moisture content under 6% which is really good.
The reason I would be getting it stabilized is to add durability to the wood.
The stabilizing infuses the wood with an acrylic polymer that impregnates the wood fibers making it much more durable.
Kind of like insurance for the wood because not everyone gives their knives the care they should.

Johnny B Good.
I am assuming the guy on the right is supposed to be you,
because the guy on the left has hair just like mine.
Stefan can be the Ukranian, "Koa is game to you?!!!"

Indeed, we in Ukraine have a lot of wood at a reasonable price, but there problemma with the stabilization of wood, and there is little wizards that can make high-quality wa handle

I doesn't seem like its to big until he puts it on the truck. Then its a *&*%^%$* **^% (*^&% $$^&^.

The first batch of the bog oak that I showed in the previous photos is at K&G being stabilized.
I was very impressed with the quality of the wood so I ordered a larger batch.
They arrived today.
bo009.jpg

Now off to K&G to get these stabilized too.

I am patiently waiting for this...
As soon as the 1st batch comes back from K&G I will make a post here.
I am guessing about 2 weeks away.

Most people use bog oak without getting it stabilized.
But I figured this stuff was worth investing a little money into having it stabilized.
I look at the stabilizing like an insurance policy.
Plus it makes it so the wood will take a better finish.

OK, I'm sold. Who here makes D-handles so far?? Mike will experiment for me in palm, who else? My Masamoto ho is looking downright sad compared to some of the woods I've seen here lately...

:sofa: I am afraid to see how much these will be posted for.:fanning:

Looks great, Mark! Great alternative to some of the other dark woods.

Marko does some REALLY beautiful work

Hey, what just happened? I looked on your site, Mark, and I see that you posted some bog oak, but they're all sold? Was I not invited to the party? :eyebrow: :nunchucks:
